On New Years Day evening I targetted Uranus and its moons in Pisces and whilst in area shot NGC128 nearby [below]. This mag 12 gxy records a 'box-like' central region and in the deep Sloan DSS pic [inset] a curved appearance to the right [west]. The N128 field has many faint mag 15 gxys too but field worth a look.
Any explanation for N128's form

Here's the gxy field ~30' NE of N128 - marked stars mag10.5-10.8 and gxys circled from Sloan DSS

I can't remember if I've seen that one or not. Think so but don't remember a boxy shape. I probably just saw a fuzzy oval, best guess. When I get home tonight or later this weekend, I'll have to check. That's an interesting observation though. Pretty weird. This is what observing is all about. Noticing those unusual things.

Maurice, I haven't seen this galaxy, but from The de Vaucouleurs Atlas of Galaxies I remember that bars, in certain orientations, look like an X (what you called a box) when the galaxy is viewed edge-on. In other words, if I remember correctly, many bars have ends that are raised above the plane of the disk. Visually such cores indeed look box-like (if the feature is detected at all), but in your inset it is clearly the very characteristic "X".

I found notes on this object from Aug. 2010. It was using my f/5 12.5" dob
@181X Fairly bright, fair size, elongated NS, (?) 2 bright cores. @ 304X note extension to West off North end.

Dead on...Barred spiral galaxy seen edge on in certain orientations.

When I view NGC-128 it reminds me of Flash Gordons space ship....with the two flanking galaxies. This is visually with a 20-25" dob. It doesn't show in the image as well as the illusion of what I have seen...although faint.

Long exposures of NGC4565 show this peanut-shaped core as well. You might find this interesting: http://chandra.as.utexas.edu/~kormendy/NGC4565.pdf The question is: Is NGC4565 a barred spiral or not?
