i have 2 main scopes, a meade 8"sct that came off of a lx10 and a orion 10" dob. just bought a celestron cg5 goto mount. the 8" is really a fine scope and i can see a lot!!! with a 2" diagonal and 26MM q 70 ep. ive got the fever for more apature with a sct. meades out, too heavy so im between celestrons 9.25 and 11". the 9.25 is tempting because of its smaller size and weight, but 3 more inches with the 11" is even more tempting. from what ive been told here that the cg5 can handle both, little shack would not bother me, the head would be on a pier. i would go for the 9.25 if i know i would notice a satisfying difference. anyone go from a 8 to a 9.25 and what was your impression or should i just go for the 11". thanks, donnie

I used my C111 on a cg5, with lot's of groaning and gnashing of gears. Just about doable on a pier for visual.
Go for the C11 as a 9.5 won't be much of a change form your 8" and certainly no change from your 10"

While many praise the C9.25, I found it to be nothing special.
The C11 though was much more satisfactory to me. Lots of aperture, but in a package that is not all that much bigger than a C9.25.
Just about every class of target looked much better to me in the C11 than in the C9, which was so small improvment over the C8 that It lasted only a couple of months for me.
The C11 lasted 3 or 4 years before I wanted more, but the difference between a C11 and C14 is a much bigger step in terms of effort than between an 8" and an 11" I think.
While I really love the C14, I think the best Celestron SCT is the C11. Right size, right price, right performance.
As for your mount, people do it, but it will be very marginal. But mounts are cheap these days, and if you love love love the scope, then one day you can get a used EQ6 or someething to put it on and have a great outfit.
But the telescope determines how much you see, not the mount. If you want to see as much as possible using a still somewhat easy to manage SCT, the C11 is to me, the best possible way to do it. Not that the C14 is hard to manage, but it isn't nearly as easy as a C11.

I'd go for the 11". The size and weight of the 9.25" is not all that different from the 11" - more specifically the weight of the 11" is only a few pounds heavier!
I think the jump to 11" will be well worth it whereas going to the 9.25" may only provide minimal advantage in contrast (from what I've read over the years) and not so much in the view!

Ed,
You'd think differently if you could mount your C14 permanently. Isn't a scope buggy an option for you? I know you feel otherwise; but while I can't speak to the C14, the difference in performance between a C11 and a Meade 14" isn't subtle at all - in fact it's immediately obvious (at least, it was to me).
Isn't there some way you could leave your C14 set up full time?

It is not that I can't manage the C14. I do it well enough.
Rather, I was saying that relative to the difference between the 8" and 11" SCT, the level of effort to go from the 11" to the 14" is to me much greater. The 11" doesn't seem that much more difficult to manage than a C8. The OTA just doesn't weigh all that much. The bulk and weight change from the C11 to the C14 though is (to me) a much bigger step. Lots of people would be uncomfortable mounting a C14.
I am tall, quite handsome, charming, and clever. For a man of my many talents, managing a C14 is not a great effort. But it is a much bigger effort than managing a C11 on a CG5 .. LOL.

There are always pros and cons. The c11 may show you a little more then the c9.25 but will take longer to cool.
Out of the (3) c8, c9.25, and c11 I think the c9.25 is the best for planetary use.
If I had a cg5 in mind, I wouldn't go bigger then a c9.25.
I have owned c8, c9, and c11s, and have used cg5s, Sirius, Atlas, gm8, and cge for mounts. In my opinion a c8 is great on a cg5, a c9.25 needs a Sirius or Atlas but is ok on a cg5. A c11 needs and Atlas or cgem. Others will claim a cg5 works fine with a c11, well, you can also use a shovel to dig for a 20 x 40 inground pool.

vct123, that was really funny!!! about the pool. i guess i will just have to give all this a great deal of thought. i may just wind up using the 8" on the cg5 and purchase a 12" goto reflector.i can build a cart for it to hall out on the patio or driveway. i had a 12" zummall none goto and had it on a cart, it worked out real fine but i must have goto because of the light polution here. i dont have the $ to buy another mount so it decision time. thanks for all the replies, donnie

If you really want to be happy, you should upgrade both your OTA and mount. Some people will put a C11 on the CG-5. I am not one of them. You will have a much better experience overall with a C11 on a CGEM and will be better able to spend your time observing rather than fiddling around.

i went outside today (the temp, was real nice)and tested out different weights 20 30 and 35lbs to see if i could handle them by lifting each one up to the mount head the 30 and 35 would eventually put me on crutches, the 20lb weight was just about wright so im going with the celestron 9.25 sct. i think the cg5 can handle it real well just for visual. thanks for all the comments. donnie
