It has been cloudy every single night since early December here. I was looking out the window today at work and noticed gorgeous clear blue skies! Couldn't wait to get out except when I did, I found that there were 25 mph winds! Aaaaaagh! And they're predicted to continue throughout the night. I just can't win!

I haven't had but maybe three nights since December myself MD.
I feel your pain.
The frustrating part is that I didn't even buy anything!

Dan - It just isn't right that those ol' weather gods cause us such consternation Just isn't fair but it sure seems to happen to us a lot! I had two weeks of clouds but was finally able to get my 6SE out on Saturday and spent a few hours observing. Got my refractor out the next night and had good views of Jupiter. Then here came the rain this week Anyway... hang in there and maybe the wind will blow somewhere else and you will be able to get some viewing in! Tony

Dan it's that Christmas present you bought yourself. I'm telling ya it's the curse... From my experience here's the cost
New eyepiece = 1 night New mount = 3 nights New telescope = 7 nights
New observatory = 1 month if your lucky. I just feel sorry for the folks that live near you that didn't get anything. They're really the ones getting hosed in the deal...

But I don't even have the observatory yet! Well, if I can get the curse out of the way early, I suppose that would be ok. My Clear Sky Chart shows nice clear skies all today ... and then clouds rolling in for the evening - of course!
I shouldn't be surprised. This has happened every year since I started observing about 4 years ago. I take a week vacation around Thanksgiving and 2 weeks around Christmas. You'd think that with 3 weeks open and available I'd get some observing time in. But every year, it's been cloudy for at least a couple of months solid, right when I'm taking time off. Never realized how bad the weather was around here till I took up this hobby!

Yeah, me too!
It was clouded over all day yesterday and cleared up around 7pm. Was windy with gusts up to 20 mph, but I went out anyway.

I did do an outreach event last weekend (BUT inside a building due to rain)...

Its the same here in the U.K. I have managed only one nights obsreving in over two months. As with Dan, on the few nights that were clear, (3 in total) the wind was too strong to even think about observing. Still, hope springs eternal.
Regards. Peter.

And in similar vein, Dan and Peter,
They say the Sun shines every day, But all we ever get is grey !
Month on month it gets no better, Just becoming all the wetter !
Return Jet Stream and mend your way, And drive these UK clouds away !
But last night with stars so bright, I ventured out: all seemed so right !
Though setting up, was quite a chore, (I'd forgotten how to; anymore. (?)
The problem solved; through notes and log, I then was thwarted by the fog !
(Tennyson or Wordsworth it certainly ain't, but ? )
Best regards, Tel

That is a good one, Tel!!
Well all of you have seen me complaining that we really, really need the rain. Cancel that for awhile. The past two days we have had about 3-4 inches of the wet stuff. Temps in the 40s & 50s F. That is more rain in two days than we got in the last 3 months of 2012! Sun is trying to come out now and the temp is supposed to go into the 60s and tomorrow into the 70s. Then this weekend more rain and by Sunday temps in the 20s. Ain't winter great?
But really grateful for the rain! We are still in a drought situation, but hopefully as the year wears on we will get enough rain to get rid of the drought.
Here's hoping that those of you living in "duck" weather will get some sunshine and stars soon. But no drought! I wouldn't wish that on anyone - not fun watching your yards and gardens croak!

Thank you Tel, for your little ditty.
It's full of fun and very witty.
Sad to say, it's words ring true.
Our clear nights are now so few.
But we'll press on, emotions steady.
Standing firm, equipment ready.
So when at last the stars appear.
All round the world, they'll hear the cheer.
(Tennyson or Wordsworth, I don't know Tel, we'd run them close)
Regards. Peter.

dear Dan
same situation north of the border.
i thougth it was because of my new refractor and change to pentax EPs.
now i know it is because of your new observatory. we should prepare for a couple of months of bad weather
during the holidays i had to clean snow from a 60 mm storm followed a couple of days later by a second one of 47mm.
i spend more time shovelling snow than observing the stars.
i tried with clouds yesterday my repaired 8se and it worked well with excellent go tos.
strangely enough the go tos were erratic without Ron's rail (i sold my powerswitch so did not need it for clearance) and were perfect when i put it back on. As long as it works!!

I think that "Postmaster" needs changing to "Poet Laureate" Tel

Sorry Peter - didn't realise that you'd penned a different poem.

I hear you; since opening the 'scope on Christmas, Ohio's been pretty miserable as well. We've had 1 good night (meaning, 1 clear night...the stars were still twinkling like crazy), 1 night where I got in a quick shot of Jupiter just before the clouds rolled in (that was my first light), and one night that taunted me when I had a ton of schoolwork I had to do before the next day, so no 'scope that night. Yesterday evening looked like I might get some in, but then the clouds rolled in as the Sun went down

Sorry to hear of your weather woes
Sometimes my friends that's how it goes.
Had a decent sky last night
Star were seen far and bright
Didn't let the wind blow me over
But the cold made me run for cover!
Sorry no Dickerson or Nash

Wow! The poetry floweth! Nice job guys! Much better than I could do!
And, as predicted, clear skies today but clouds rolling in on my way home from work. Must be the Christmas season. With all the new scopes, accessories, and yes, even observatories , Zeus (god of clouds, storms, etc.) is having a field day!
