I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't work out how to get to it, specifically, in the search.

I own a PST with which I'm very happy. I've enjoyed it so much, I'd like to improve my H-Alpha setup. Given the finances, I have two options:

1) sell PST, buy Lunt 60 SS.
2) buy SM40 unit to double stack my PST.

Which do you think would be the better value? Is 60mm single stacked better, worse, about the same as 40mm double stacked?

I'm sure others will advise on a direct comparison.

I have only compared directly a PST DS to a SM60 SS back when Coronado was in Tucson, but from what I saw I'd get the Lunt LS60T/PT. The increased aperture is significant in this range, and along with the pressure tuning and overall improvement in quality, will make it the much better scope for observing detail...

Then save up to double stack with the LS60F in the future.

Sell the PST and get the 60 S. I have a PST DS and there are many advantages upgrading to a 60. Too me having a real focuser instead of a tiny knob at the bottom. A rotating focuser, that is so much easier to use on an EQ mount, and the ability to use bino's and cameras on EQ mounts, safely. Then there is the larger apeture, with the bigger sweet spot, brighter image and larger image of the Sun. I still have my PST, but only used it once last year for the Annular eclipse, while I imaged with the 60 DS.

Thanks, all. I forgot about Ramsden's site. And a bit more work got me some similar threads. SS 60 > DS 40 seems to be the view of a large majority.

I'll take all the info under consideration and keep on reading for a bit. Cheers.

This may be a dumb question, but if one double stacks a Lunt 60, it appears to be with a unit that has a 50mm etalon. Wouldn't this stop the scope down to 50mm? Wouldn't that negate a lot of the aperture gain in moving to 60mm in the first place?

It seems silly enough that I'm pretty sure I'm reading the information I've found incorrectly. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

You can buy a Lunt 60mm external etalon to double stack with.
