Does anyone know what the spare port is used for on the mount?

Auto focus, or just about anything that will plug in and use 12VDC.

Could it then in that case be used for an auto guider for ccd work?

Yeah, if the device is compatible with the LXD. I would stick with Meade equipment to be sure it is.

Nothing like watching a puff of smoke rolling out of electronics.

The LX90, which uses the same Autostar controller, has the same aux port and on that scope it's intended to accept an "auxiliary port module". This module has autoguide and focuser and illuminated reticule connections and interfaces those functions with the Autostar controller.

As I understand it, the APM does permit the Autostar to control a JMI-style focuser on an LXD55 but I haven't heard of anyone getting the autoguide port to work with an LXD55.

If you want to experiment I just saw an APM on astromart for $40. http://www.astromart.com/viewad.asp?cid=207956
