CG-5 Mount and Polar Alignment Scope
      #5617762 - 01/11/13 06:41 PM

Just received a Celestron 9.25 SCT with CG-5GT mount as a gift from my family Curious about the polar axis of the mount. Celestron part #94224 listed as polar alignment scope but it doesn't fit the mount. There appears to be a fitting already installed in the polar axis of the mount with the time and date circles as well as three thumb screws for adjustment. It looks like it's ready for a small eyepiece. The part 94224 scope I received looks like it would screw into the mount IF I remove what's already there. I'm confused.

Yes, I understand that the Go-To mount alignment should be good enough but I'm curious none the less about this situation on the CG-5GT mount.

Pictures are worth a gazillion words, so try to post a couple.

FWIW, try reading the manual.

Remove what's already there and install the new polar scope. The part that comes with the mount is for a different style polar scope. Take the index ring off (The sivler ring with the numbers on it) and put replace the plain ring that comes on the new scope. Depending on the alignment procedure you choose, this may come in handy.

I think you need to remove the ring from the CG5 with the 3 set screws, and then the new scope screws into the back. The ring with 3 set screws was used for an older style polar scope (like on mine). I hope this helps.

FWIW I don't belive it's in the manual. Maybe you have a page number of the manual?

Here are some instructions that are a bit more complete than the Celestron version.

This makes sense. Searching with Google revealed there is an older polar scope with a part number of 94221 that appears to be difficult to find. It also appears that you really just need to rough in the polar alignment and then finish up with the Go-To two star alignment. There also seems to be some recommendations for getting a reticle eyepiece with cross hairs for the 9.25 SCT itself to make sure you center the alignment stars in the telescope field of view.

Thanks everyone for the help. I've been interested in amateur astronomy since my teenage years, had a small, inexpensive Tasco refractor that I fumbled around with. I recently retired from AT&T after 34 years and my family gave this fine setup for a retirement gift!

I live near St. Louis, MO and there is a local club called Riverbend Astronomy Club that I have contacted and will try to make some meetings.

Welcome aboard!

Warning: may be habit forming (both CN and astronomy)
