The clouds came in last night so I only got one 3 minute frame each of LRGB. I did take 10 x 5 minute frames of Ha but they were only usable for the luminosity of the core. I'll know next time to do 20 minute Ha sub-frames. I am surprised at what the QHY9 can do with an 8" f6 Newt. with so little data. It's been heavily stretched & also sharpened at 2 pixels. I would have been better off with 2 x 25 minute frames in the same time but I was shooting between clouds. It did help with getting some detail out of the core in the first image. The trapezium came up nicely as the Ha stars are always small. I am jealous of people who gather data all night for 3 nights in a row. It must be a joy to process such good data. I notice that there is always something that doesn't quite go right. Each night is a new adventure & always new problems to solve. e.g. for the above images - at the end of the night - I went to carefully take the telescope out of the tube rings complete with camera so that I could do some flats later on & my Baader Varilock adjustment sleeve had come loose. The camera just turned when touched - therefore - no flats! I'll know to do it up tight next time. Another problem was a satellite that went through the red frame. I found a great trick with Photoshop. I used the magic wand to select it then adjusted curves to minimise it - then I used the "Spot healing brush tool" which I'd never used before in little dabs along the trail. It removed it perfectly. I'm sure I'll get some good nights & I hope to give the QHY9 a real workout this year. I am so surprised by my new camera - it's a big step up in performance from an unmodded Canon EOS 1000d. I had taken some LRGB shorter duration shots that I hadn't looked at till today. I ended up combining the 10s & a 60 s RGB subs ( 2 subs for each colour) with entropy weighted stacking in DSS & used only RGB to make a colour shot of the Trapezium. (The luminance was blown out too much to use.) I then combined this improved image in layers into my Orion image to show the Trapezium better. The larger new version of Orion is on my flickr photos. I think it's quite an improvement? Did I get more than 4 stars? The first image of The Trapezium is displayed at full resolution but cut down for a .jpg. I can see more stars there but they are faint. The Ha gives tighter sharper stars but not such a pretty pic. Cheers, Harel Thanks Harel, I did use maybe 10% opacity of the Ha data but 100% for the core of the first image as Luminosity. I am still getting used to the Ha data but one thing is for sure I'll have to make 20 minute subframes or go for 5 minute at 2x2 binning to get enough signal ( but lose sharpness) I am only using gain of 5% and offset of 100. Bill Thanks Bill, It ended up a bit more than 12 minutes of data when the Trapezium information was added.
