I have an ETX 125PE and when I fire up the Autostar the very first screen says it is 43e - is that current? Is it worth an update if not, as I have never tried that. I believe I have the original 497, not the 497ep handset. Thanks

The #497 ETX Autostar is what the ETX 125 came with.
Note at Meade Support:
Quote:
Important note about #497 Autostars. The classic #497, and the newer #497EP, utilize different firmware that is not interchangeable. However, the #497EP Autostar is backward compatible with prior generation telescope that used AutoStar technology. If you have an older version of the #497, it will continue to work with your existing telescope. AutoStar Updater 5.9 or greater can detect either version and load the appropriate firmware.
Current version shown for that controller is 43Eg
Also at Meade Support:
Quote:

#497 AutoStar hand controller software update.
Version 43Eg (479 KB) is available. To get this new version, use either the 43Eg link to download and unzip the file to the Ephemerides directory of the Autostar Update (ASU) installation directory; or use ASU and press "Upgrade Autostar Software Now" and ASU will download and upgrade the handbox. If you don't already have ASU use the link on this page to download and install it on your PC. New Initialization instructions for Autostar exist.
Safest way is to use Autostar Update as it will check for compatibility.

Thanks. That whole thing makes me very nervous. The old "leave well enough alone" saying. I got a replacement scope from Meade back in July 2010, so I assume that they would have the most current firmware on the refurbished scope they provided me with. Plus I see a date of 4/13/07 for the 43eg version, so I assume I must be okay. If one did decide to try the update, specifically what would you have to re do to the autostar or data to re enter? Thanks alot

Also, the cable you are to use to connect the Autostar to your pc still has the old serial RS-232 port, so I would need an adapter. Meade wants $50 for that. Then you have download different drivers to use it. Sounds like a mess.

" specifically what would you have to re do to the autostar or data to re enter?"
cost depends on how handy you are. one can make their 505 cable pretty easy using a telephone handset cord and a serial D9 connector. you would also need a serial to USB adapter. I would only go for the Tripplite Keyspan for about $30. download meade's updater program, and load whatever version firmware you want. (one can also use previous versions if wished) follow the on screen directions. after loading the 497, one has to do a full reset, which clears all your data... time, date, site, and whatever else that does not come with a brand new controller. then calibrate, and last but not least, train the drives.
