Never say final, right!?!? Grabbed some RGB in between clouds, rain, etc to add to my HA that I had posted earlier. It has gone through a number of iterations but I'm pretty happy at this point. Not that I might not revisit it again!

Beautiful work Warren! Is M42 ever really done? I spent hours and hours on it a couple years ago, and I'd like to do it again, next season...

I really love it when you can see the faint dust around this area as well as the trapezium at the same time. Fantastically done!

Thanks! It will depend upon your skies, if you have dark skies 5 hours would work well. If you are doing mono then put most of the time into Luminance (HA in my case) so you get the details you want. Half of my total time was done focusing on the HA which I used as the Luminance channel.

What about gathering Luminance but with my light pollution filter?
It's a 2" CLS-CCD from Astronomic.

If you are using an LP filter then you will need longer exposures to get the deep stuff but the filter should allow that. My suggestion would be to first grab your short exposures in each channel for the core. I do 10 seconds and that is pretty good to keep the core from blowing out and it doesn't take long to get 30 subs for each channel. Then try 2 minutes for the inner portions of the nebula and then finally go as long as you can without saturating the image with sky glow. 5 minutes was good for me and I am highly light polluted, but I was using an HA filter and the light pollution has little effect on it. If you can see the faint nebulosity at the top of the nebula in your sub at 5 minutes you should be good, but you will need at least 2 hours in my experience to get a clean background. Your chrominance you can typically get away with less and I blur mine so that no noise comes through the Luminance layer when I blend them together.
Hope this helps!

Hey Warren, Excellent job on this imge!!! The colors and contrast look really good. My only suggestion would be to layer a little additional hydrogen alpha data into the red channel. This will give you some nice rich saturation to the dimmest areas. Just my constructive input, though much astronomical image processing boils down personal preference .

Thanks Sal, I actually thought about the same thing and will give it a try.
Here is what I came up with after following Sal's suggestion. Subtle, but that one area definitely came out better with more saturation than before. Thanks! Flip between the B and C image and you will see the change.

Thanks Warren. I think I will use the LP filter just to see what happens. Maybe Ha on 2x2 binning would be good too - I could divide the time by 4 necessary for a good signal but of course lose a little resolution.

You should not have to bin your HA, it will come through strong even with LP. I used HA totally as my Luminance, no LP filter necessary.
