So I'm thinking about replacing the stock diagonal that came with my scope over 10 years ago. Not that it's in awful condition, but the prism isn't quite pristine and it just seems much lower quality than some others that I've seen. So I have a few questions.
First, I'm thinking about getting a 2" diagonal that can also hold my 1.25" EPs, both for the advantage of being able to use the 2" eps and if I get a good quality one, have it for future scopes. The question here is that I've heard with the 8" LX200 the light path isn't quite designed for 2" EPs so you get some vignetting either above or below a certain focal length. Anyone know what the specs on this are so that I know which 2" EPs are worth using with this scope?
Second, how much money do you really need to spend to get a good quality diagonal? There seems to be a wide range of prices for these things, and while I want a good one, I don't want to pay tons of extra money for a negligible difference. Seems like something in the $100 range should get the job range but I see them much more expensive than this as well. Thoughts?
And then of course just any advice on specific ones that you guys have had good experiences with.
Thanks

Still curious about what range of focal lengths for 2" eyepieces will work with the 8" due to the smaller light path. I know I've read about it on this forum somewhere before where someone threw some math at it, but can't seem to find that now.

There was a recent thread over in the ETX forum that you might be thinking of.
There will be some vignetting in an 8" scope but you will be impressed with the view through any low-power, ultra-wide 2" eyepiece.
Personally I use the Nagler 31, but there are a number of more economical 2" ultra-wide 30-35mm eyepieces on the market to choose from. There will be some visible darkening at the edge of the field of view but it is usually not severe enough to take much away from the beautiful, panoramic views.

AstroTech should also be on your eval radar.
I use the AT2SD with my LX200R, and it performs superbly with the whole 5000 SWA line !

Thanks for the info Chris, I'll check out the ETX forum and see if I can't find that thread.
Scott, I hadn't looked at the AstroTech one yet, but will do. Just got a 12mm eyepiece from them and it's great.

Ok so looking mainly at the William Optics and AstroTech ones right now. Not sure how to make a decision between the two, seems like the biggest difference is the material(carbon fiber vs. aluminum) and thus weight.
Does anyone have any experience with the GSO brand? They make one that is right at $100 and appears very similar to the WO and AT models. Is there a noticeable drop in quality or should I just spend the extra $50(which could be helping to fund a new eyepiece!) and go with one of the two brands previously mentioned?

The 99% dialectric one's are the way to go. Make sure you can rotate it easily.....then get yourself a nice 30-35mm 2" EP and enjoy these great winter star clusters that are out now:)

Do you think the 2 inch, 72 degree, 40mm William Optics would give decent low power views with the 8" OTA?

Went with the GSO 2". Just came in the mail today, installed and ready to go. Now to buy that first 2" EP...decisions, decisions.

Yea, A little bummed I didn't see that first. Oh well, I have a 2" diagonal now and I want something a little larger than a 24mm. Pulling the trigger on the ES 28mm soon I think. Probably grab that 24mm ES 82* once they show back up in stock again.

The 28mm is a great EP and check out the reviews on it when you get time.
