I gave M42 a shot with my new TAR-3 on my mod. 350D
this is a set of 1 sec, a set of 30 sec and 2 min
this is one tuff object to process but considering I live in the heart of San Diego and shoot form the pool area of my condo complex with lights all over the place I must say I'm happy with this one

The only issue I have with Gradient Exterminator is that you often don't have enough control over it and it can darken areas you want to keep light, like the fainter portions of your nebula.
Adam Block has a great series on working in Photoshop and one of the tutorials is how to Desaturate the background to get rid of gradients and maintain the fainter portions of nebulosity. The series is called Making Every Pixel Count and is a great DVD for working with your images.

Unfortunately you need to purchase the DVD but it was one of the best $100 I spent on this hobby. What I like is that he shows all of the steps and you can pause and follow along on your own image with the steps. It is my main reference for processing. http://www.caelumobservatory.com/video/dvd.shtml

I did go back and tinkered with GX and I see what a difference it made My stars are a bit blotted as well so I clearly need to spend a little more time on focus but all and all it’s my best shot of it to date And if and when I get up to my clubs dark site I’ll give it another go Thanks for the comments Mike
