Another year and again I couldn't resist imaging this beautiful region. This time, using the curved spider, I had very high hopes to get an image without the HUGE spike of Alnitak dominating the frame. For the first time, I could see what lies under the glare of Alnitak. I'm VERY happy with this modification of the scope!
Hope you agree with me...
Kfir

Sooo.....it makes you wonder if/when people who don't have the last name Borel or Simon are going to be able to order/buy one of these. I love the idea of a ridiculously fast Newtonian. I've looked long and hard at the PowerNewts as well as the pricier offerings from AG Optical and ASA. I just can't get past the huge diffraction spikes that show up in the images....or I'd probably have one already.
Now a 12" f/2.8 Newtonian with a carbon fiber tube and curved vane spider....& feathertouch focuser mated to my ST-8300 & filters would be a match made in heaven for my typical seeing conditions.
Very nice image Kfir. It's one more reason to give the Powernewts serious consideration.

Kfir, do you notice the spider acting as a spring or any collimation issues? Some of the DIY guys around here have used some of the replacement spiders and noted they did not provide a solid connection for the secondary.

Thank you all!
Chris - I have noticed that the spider isn't perfectly stiff - causing some collimation shift as the tube rotates from one side of the sky to the other. I think it is due the weight of the large secondary mirror. I found a simple solution - at every new object - I collimate the secondary again. Since I rarely image an object for longer then +/- 2Hrs -the scope remains in collimation for this 30 deg movement in the sky.
I think that wider vanes will elliminate this effect (the ones I use are 1" wide and there are 1.5" wide in the market)
I hope this helps....
All the best,
Kfir

Hi Kfir, Well it's a major improvement on this pic without the curved spider using the power Newt.:

I hope you can get a stronger spider to stop that re-collimation problem.

The curved spider design looks to be quite the performer. Your stars look great, well shaped and sharp. Congrats on a fine image!
