This time, using the curved spider, I had very high hopes to get an image without the HUGE spike of Alnitak dominating the frame. For the first time, I could see what lies under the glare of Alnitak. I'm VERY happy with this modification of the scope! Hope you agree with me... I love the idea of a ridiculously fast Newtonian. I've looked long and hard at the PowerNewts as well as the pricier offerings from AG Optical and ASA. I just can't get past the huge diffraction spikes that show up in the images....or I'd probably have one already. Now a 12" f/2.8 Newtonian with a carbon fiber tube and curved vane spider....& feathertouch focuser mated to my ST-8300 & filters would be a match made in heaven for my typical seeing conditions. Some of the DIY guys around here have used some of the replacement spiders and noted they did not provide a solid connection for the secondary. Chris - I have noticed that the spider isn't perfectly stiff - causing some collimation shift as the tube rotates from one side of the sky to the other. I think it is due the weight of the large secondary mirror. I found a simple solution - at every new object - I collimate the secondary again. Since I rarely image an object for longer then +/- 2Hrs -the scope remains in collimation for this 30 deg movement in the sky. I think that wider vanes will elliminate this effect (the ones I use are 1" wide and there are 1.5" wide in the market) I hope this helps....
