dome tent? new
      #5625822 - 01/16/13 09:13 AM

I've seen pics on the internet of people using a cheap dome tent for use as an observatory but they never mention the manufacturer or model number. Can anyone recommend a good dome tent tall enough to be comfortable in?

An alternative might be the Kendrick Observing tent.

You might look at this one, made especially for astronomy.

I don't know of a "Cheap" version of these things.....Aren't most of them alterations (and expensive alterations) of standard designs.

I've seen some people recommend hunting blinds for use with small scopes. Is that what you're looking for?

Welcome to Cloudy Nights.

I also have seen mentions of hunting blinds or dome tents being used. I think they would be a sort of do it yourself project...that is, height of opening, place to sit etc. I was looking at these options also. I also looked at the ready made, purpose built tents. I still don't have anything. My place of residence has a lot to do with it. Take a look at various tents available. They are numerous and come in every imaginable design, for going to Everest or for simply camping out in your backyard. Have fun in your search.

Best, Linda B.

Hi I have just bought one of these to at least keep some of the wind and cold off me might also stop all the gear getting wet with condensation, I have made a wooden base to locate the ends of the legs in rather than use guy ropes etc

Smart Astronomy Tent

The Kendrick tent is too. It also has an additional room that is not exposed to night sky, which is convenient for keeping warm(er), locating imaging computers, etc.

I like those tents, unfortunatley, you put the word astronomy in front of tent and the price shoots up $300 bucks.

I use a hunting blind, that I cut the top out of it. It is great for keeping the cold wind off of me and any stray light out of my eyes. And it was not that much money.

Just trying to give ideas; perhaps you can buy a similiar tent at a "reasonable" price & remodle it like the "Astronomy tents".

Before I had my dobservatory; I looked at just about every tent on the internet, not finding something suitable for my needs; at that time the Smart Astronomy was not available, and the Kendrick was much too large for my deck.
