Hi all. I've been estimating variable stars, mainly LPV's, for over 5 years, and have recently began observing some of the UXOR and Irregular stars too. I'd like to give these stars closer scrutiny by learning and eventually using photometry. Could the Atic Titan be used ? I mention this camera because I was thinking of doing green channel DSLR work, but as the Titan is similarly priced, is cooled, monochrome and I can use a V filter, and add a filter wheel to include other filters later etc.. I will be using an ed80 refractor or maybe my 6 inch achromat. Any thoughts? Thanks, Doug.

I don't know anything about this camera, it might be fine. I might suggest that you consider a used one known to do good photometry. I have seen older ST7s going for less than the unit you mention.

The ATIC is AGB and for photometry it's best to use a NAGB camera like the ST7 mentioned before.

Thanks Ed, Hubert, Agreed, I think I'll have to wait until a good second hand camera comes up for sale. What do you think of using the achromat for this sort of work?

That is a question that I can't answer because I always used a SCT.

Same here, Doug; I use a Schmidt-Newtonian. I might guess that it would be no problem with a photometric V. For example, I know people who do photometry with DSLR lenses, essentially refractors. I suggest an email AAVSO headquarters, I bet they will say "no problem."

Thanks Hubert, Ed,
I'll ask around on the AAVSO photometry forum, maybe someone is using one or has experience with refractor/ccd set-ups.
Doug.
