I'm trying something different to make it easier to setup. I leave the mount connected to the tripod. I have two counter weights on the shaft and wondered if that would cause any problems in the long run? I had been taking the mount off the tripod and storing it separately. The optical tube I keep in the house. Is this a good or bad practice?

My CG-5 is always on the mount except for travel. It's certainly quicker to set up than re-attaching the mount every time. It makes it harder to carry, of course, especially mine, since I have the Orion pier extension on it as well. As long as I remove the counterweight, it's just manageable from the living room out to the sidewalk.

I just leave mine outside, covered with a Telegizmo 365 cover. I bring the OTA inside the garage. But the mount head+tripod +usb hub and assorted wires all live outside in the cold.
