Monday we went up Rock Candy Mtn Rd in the Capitol Forest area SW of Olympia. We broke out of the fog at about 1000ft elevation, but did not make it all the way up because the road still had a foot or more of snow on it. We did hike up a ways in the wonderful sun. The Olympics in the background.

I love those 'above the fog' days. Wish I'd been there.

Good to see everyone still active. Mike, your IS bino experience has convinced me that I don't need the 50mm (that I never would have bought). I have been really wanting some since last summer during the goldendale heavenly pixieland star party that now seems like it was a different planet. The lounge chair experience there was so nice that I too long for another trip to gd. I think I may have some 12*36 is bino by then. My CEO just announced our bonus amounts and it goes close to the price of the 12x36 version. I'll have to add some to it but, it will be cool to buy them for just 200 or so.

Oh BTW, count me in on pixieland and any other SP at Mike's astro paradise. Hold the wind though. While it was exciting, it was hard on the shelters:-)

Dung Beetles are astronomers too and they do it without Goto.

Is it any surprise then that early humans could find their way across the globe?

I always keep a few dung beetles in my scope. Helps the GOTOs
Meade is trying to claim they invented the technology, but I think we all know better.

Another example of insects using polarized light to navigate, as do honeybees . . . pretty cool dung!

One of my biology colleagues at work is an entomologist and a bee expert. He's out of grad school not more than 5 years. Says he was taught that insect eyes could not make use of starlight. Bees of course use the sun. As Mike points out since its the polarization that their eyes are sensitive to, starlight will do just fine. Resolution is not important. This is groundbreaking work.

Anybody notice that 12" LX90 ACF GPS for $1500 on the local CL?
I asked about it, and the seller said it's NIB, just lacking the tripod.
I'd be all over that, but it's not much of an upgrade to my NS11 to go through all the gyrations of a new scope and such. I also hear the 12" might be a bit undermounted. Still not a bad deal for a nice 12" GOTO.

Good stuff. Pretty amazing.
Now why do I feel the need to start quoting juvenile poetry written on restroom walls?
He who writes on bathroom walls Rolls up dung in little balls....

Thanks Stacy! The "landscape" was out on the North end of Camano Island... The moon was shot through my AT6RC last night. I've been trying to mount it up more often. The last time out with it for an imaging series, the focus shifted due to the severe tempurature drop while imaging. it was very disapointing...

We had some clear patches last night. I was exhausted after last week at work but it felt good to peek at the Orion Nebula, the Pleiades, Jupiter and the Moon through binocs. Just looking up was therapy.
