Does anyone recommend a free imaging program that will be good for me as a beginner? I would like to be able to stack photos and slightly edit them.

DSS deep sky stacker is a good free program but not much post processing in it. Nebulosity by "stark labs" is a better option, it's not free but low cost.

For free DSS is the best way to go for stacking.
If you are also looking for a free editing program try gimp. May be other options but I know gimp is free.

Unfortunately Gimp is still 8 bit only. The "unstable" version is capable of 16/32 bit but it is not available.

Fitswork is free, so is Paint.net, both post-stacking software for editing the final pic.
StarTools is only 60 bucks, you can download and do everything but save the final image without purchase.
