Been out of the game... my 'scope needs fixed!
      #5641173 - 01/24/13 06:05 PM

My Celestron Astromaster has sat in the attic for the past few years (long story). We've moved twice and the scope tripod is missing parts like knobs and such. The scope is okay but the view finder got messed up.

Can I just buy new parts somewhere to get up and running? Should I send it back to Celestron and have it gone over?

Thanks for the help.

You can always get another viewfinder or even better get a red dot finder.

I replaced many knobs on my scopes with ones I obtained from Elliot's Hardware. If you have a place like this around you might try them first, much cheaper than shipping it to Celeston. And you can pretty much forget about Home Depot and Lowes they just don't carry a good selection of metric items. I have never found anything that I could use on my scopes at either of those places. Ace hardware has a fair selection though, you might try them too.

Thanks for the reply. The viewfinder I am hoping I can repair with a solder gun. Never thought of checking out my local Ace though.... gotta look into that.

I've been so far out of this that I almost need to start over. My boys have been after me for months to get this out and fixed up.

I've got a lot of misc. parts that may help. Your for the postage. Assuming your Astromaster is a Newt, not much point in returning it to Celestron. Optical tubes sell on eBay for $30-40, less than shipping to Torrance and back.

If you get me some pics, can probably figure out your needs.
I'll PM you my email addy.

Thanks for the help. I will get some pics together. Can I upload pics here directly or must I have an online host?

You can attach them if they are small enough.

If you have Microsoft Office, Use the Picture Manager to change the size till it fits into CN's parameters.

Notice the scratch. I think I am missing whatever part that goes between this and the scope.

The view finder is toast. The cap and battery holder is gone. Upgrades??

This is an astromaster 130? It might be best to send this one onto the great OTA in the sky and replace it with another scope. Sometimes, its best to just let them go peacefully.......

Yeah, I am already looking at a new scope. Either another 130 or maybe downsize a bit to the 114.

So you're saying this one is beyond repair? At least the tri-pod is in good shape...

Is it about 1.5 inches in diameter and belongs inside the OTA facing the focuser??? The secondary is positioned so that you look through the focuser and see the primary mirror. Every Newtonian has a secondary mirror.

Jon

Yeah, that's the seconadary in it's holder. Think there'd a 6mm screw about an inch and a half long that holds it in the spider. Might be a spring involved too. Is the spider still in the open end of the tube? Probably should replace/recoat the mirror, but I've used worse. You can get a set of optics for these scopes on eBay for $30-40. Guess a fair number of these tubes get badly dinged in shipping. Look at eBay items 360571631032 and 370733796460. I've got one of those reddot finders somewhere.

Its reflective surface destroyed by constant photon bombardment; this brave little secondary now takes up its new life as a varment thrower....
