Hi everyone!
I was fortunate to have clear skies with a decent temp of 40-45 F for viewing the appulse between Jupiter and the Moon.
The full report is here or you can see the CN link in the observing forum here.
All sketches were done at the eyepiece and then flipped horizontally for better comparison to a naked eye view. The sketches created with black Strathmore Artagain paper, white Conté pastel pencil and color pencil, black color pencil. I changed to monochrome in Photoshop because the photos of the sketches gave them a bluish hue that I didn't care for.

Terrific sequence, Erika I see you were able to capture the western edge of Sinus Iridum catching the sunlight deep inside the terminator. The whole effect is close to perfect.
I'm really glad you had the conditions to follow the appulse. Way to cold and windy here--I took a few pics (one is posted in the General Observing forum) and then retreated indoors.

Erika,
Very, very fine sketching. I stepped outside for 90 seconds to have a quick look but - 17 degrees C is too coooold for me to sketch. I am happy you did this. It makes a great animated sequence that I just looked at over at Chuck Wood's site LPOD. It will be there all day Wednesday for those that want to see it. http://lpod.wikispaces.com/January+23%2C+2013

How cool is that. Thanks for letting me know, Frank, and thank you both for the kind words. I have to admit, I'm getting pretty used to the mild temps here in Texas. If I were still in Ohio, I'd be in single digit temps and snow. I was outside today in short sleeves with mid 70 temps!

I'm not sure what I'm more jealous of, Erika, your mastery of conté, or your temperatures! Predicted high for my area is 18ºF today...6ºF right now.
Anyhoo, your lunar sketches are as good as any I've ever seen. Truly remarkable illustrations, here. And you've captured the beauty of Jupiter the way I see it through my 15x85 binos. Congrats on being targeted for LPOD.

Wow Erika!
What a great and lovely sequence of sketches! And you sketch the moon from scratch on each sketch? You have my admiration for that! Outstanding reproducibility.
Here in Montreal, it was so darn cold (-20°C)that I did not even have the guts to take a photo!

thanks.
Jean, yes, they are all from scratch at the eyepiece. As you can see, Mare Crisium wobbles up and down between the sketches. I used an eyepiece cap to trace around and then filled it in with Conte' and blended. The next step was to plot Jupiter, its moons and the star field, followed by filling in the details of the lunar surface. By that time, it was nearly time to begin the next sketch. I had about a 10 minute break in between sketches.
Normally, I plot stars near the edge of the drawing field first so that I don't run into position problems. I failed to do that with this series, which resulted in me having to include stars outside of my drawing field (that were in reality within my FOV) in their correct positions relative to the other stars. I was pretty disappointed in myself with that but it was a learning experience.

Absolutely marvelous!!! The moon is truly spot-on and a beautiful example of contemporary impressionism. Also you succeed in giving the image a kind of 3D effect... as if you were truly staring at the sky. Hats off to you!!!
