Mild barlow for use with Leica 20-60x zoom?
      #5643983 - 01/26/13 08:55 AM

Any recommendations for a mild barlow with the Leica 20-60x zoom? Thanks for any ideas/recommendations.

You can screw the lens element of a Barcon onto the adapter, I dunno about the 20-60X zoom but in the ASPH this yields around 1.5X I believe. Only potential problem is the threads might not match exactly - mine don't.

A GSO barlow element would be a less expensive solution, I imagine it yields similar magnification.

I use the Antares 1.6x barlow, which actually yields around 1.54x or so. I find it to be an excellent barlow, and you can add a 2" extension to get 2x.

Actually I have the ASPH. I thought the Astro-Physics Barcon was discontinued and replaced with their 2" Advanced Convertible Barlow. Is that likely to be threaded for the ASPH? 1.5x is really what I would like.

The ASPH is not 20-60X, it's 25-50X.

I have an older Barcon which has 48mm threads but they do not match the pitch of the 48mm threads on my Leica Adapter, I can only screw it in a couple turns. I imagine the new Advanced Barcon would be the same. This is the fault of the APM Leica adapter not the Barcon.

I also have an Antares 1.6X barlow as Doug mentioned and it works really well with the Leica ASPH zoom.

Yes, you are correct, my cutting and pasting was poorly done. I guess I will go with the Antares since that is about what I was looking to obtain.

Good choice. I have found the Antares 1.6X barlow to be an extremely versatile 2" barlow - low profile, inexpensive, and excellent quality - it seems to work well with everything.

Despite the title of this thread Leica ASPH in a slow Newt the discussion mainly deals with different configurations for barlowing the Leica ASPH. In case you haven't seen it have a close look.

Andreas
