I am trying to buy some better quality .965 eyepieces for my Dad's old telescope.
When I look on the sale sites, I find almost nothing for sale.
Where are the old .965 eyepieces and why aren't they being sold?
If they are gone, any suggestions as to where to buy them new for a low price?

Hi, First off welcome to Cloudy Nights!
I once had a older telescope that used .965" eyepieces, but when I when out to look I could only find 1.25" or 2" eyepieces. This scope was a Meade 4.5" reflector and at the time Meade sent me a 1.25" focuser ring that replaced the .965" holder. This was a long time ago and I'm sure you wouldn't have as good of luck the the current Meade.
If you tell us exactly what telescope you have maybe we could make suggestions. Might be as simple as changing out a .965" 90º diagonal with a 1.25" one.
Good luck,

0.965 Plossls from Hands on Optics.
The people over in the classics forum have said nice things about these in the past.

Probably most of the .965 tupes were scrapped. Way back when .965 was the standard very few EPs back then would have had the quality of even modest 1.25" types today.
I had a refelector years ago with .965s and even though it was premium gear the optics quality was quite some below whats available today from even quite low end EPs. It wasnt that long ago that Plossls were all that and a bag of chips whereas today they are pretty much the standard.

Solution 1: acquire some 0.965" eyepieces. The two sources above have good reputations. ... or, by used. Check the Cloudynights Classifieds and and Shop and Swap forums. Another place to buy used is Astromart. There is a small fee to join; only you can decide if you think it is worth it to you. Then there is eBay. There are a lot of low quality 0.965" eyepieces out there. Scope sellers in the past skimped on the eyepieces. Before buying used look into exactly what you are buying. It's easy to waste your money that way.
Solution, adapters: there are adapters that fit into your 0.965" telescope or diagonal on one end, and you can put 1.25" eyepieces in the other end. Good 1.25" eyepieces are easy to find.
If you have a refractor and are using a diagonal, there are diagonals that fit into 0.965" telescopes on one end, and you can use 1.25" eyepieces on the other end.
Solution 3. If you have a Newtonian/reflector, this won't work. If you have a refractor, some telescopes have a black piece on the end that you insert the 0.965 diagonal diagonal in, and it holds the diagonal with a set screw. On some telescopes you can unscrew that black end piece, and replace it with a similar item but one the is 1.25" sized, and you can use your 1.25" accessories.
I would echo the suggestion that you tell us more about the model, brand and type of scope you have. Also, asking the classic scopes forum may get more interest.

If people are like me, they are not about to part with their high quality 965 eyepieces. Most made in this size were junk! But I have Orthos, Kellners, and Plossls that are some of my best eyepieces. I even have a 965 eyepiece projection adapter and many filters in the size. They are actually really convenient because you can carry them in your pocket. But the longer focal lengths have narrow fields! Best bet is to convert the scope to 1.25 if you possibly can. GW

I have been able to cobble a small reasonable set over about a year, I have had the best luck on the CloudyNights classifieds and ebay. All are Vixen made with the exception of the 12mm Kellner and a 9mm Ortho (not pictured) which are Circle 'T'.

As Glen said, the good ones, people keep. In the old days, most 0.965 inch eyepieces were 2 element Ramsdens and Huygens. I like them for what they are, brass and glass, made to be cleaned, narrow fields of view, probably uncoated. They did a reasonable job in the long focal length refractors of the era. Outside of the 22mm Kellner that came with many scopes, Kellners, orthos and especially Plossls were few and people hold onto them, they bring a premium on the used market.
If a Hybrid diagonal or better yet a 1.25 inch visual back is not possible, then I suggest looking to see what Bill Vorce at the TeleScope-Warehouse has. He has generally has a selection of Meade 0.965 inch eyepieces at very affordable prices. In my experience, they are reasonable eyepieces, especially if one is looking for affordable eyepieces.

The best .965s I have had were the Kellners Edmund sold, which were unmarked but came in a tan box, and of course the circle-T orthos, of which I have several. I actually have a Ramsden of 6mm which is a fine Jupiter eyepiece.
965s are actually pretty nice if you have a good set. Great for a backpack scope or the "grab and go."

Unfortunately, many of them ended up in the trash can with some small scopes that had some pretty decent optics, but suffered with those spindly legged scopes. Good ones are becoming harder to find. I belive S&S Optica in Denver had a handfull in their display case last time I was there, not certain what they were though, but one or two at least were Kellners.

Thank you for the advice.
If good .965 eyepieces are so hard to find, why aren't they made today?
