Following on the heels of the Arizona Science and Astronomy Exposition, on Saturday, February 16th, Astronomy Magazine will be hosting a public astronomy outreach event at Pima Community College East Campus Observatory in Tucson, Arizona from 10 AM until 9 PM.

The Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association, Mount Lemmon SkyCenter, and the International Darksky Association will be teaming with Astronomy Magazine staff and supporting indoor and outdoor activities for the day. More information can be found at

A Day Of Skywatching In Tucson, AZ

Some highlights include scheduled indoor talks:

Keith Schlottmann, president of the TAAA, “Amateur Astronomy in Southern Arizona: An Embarrassment of Riches.”
Scott Kardel, president of the International Dark Sky Association (IDA), “Light Pollution: Perspectives from Earth and Space.”
Astronomy Contributing Editor and meteoriticist Mike Reynolds, “Meteorites!”
Astronomy Magazine Editor David J. Eicher will highlight the latest findings in the science when he presents “Astronomy’s New Frontier.”
Astronomy Senior Editor Bakich will discuss things that go “Boom!” in the night in “Star Death.”

Also indoors, groups will have tabletop displays that discuss various aspects of astronomy and space science. Those that plan to exhibit include the TAAA, the IDA, the University of Arizona’s Mount Lemmon SkyCenter, and the Girl Scouts of America.

Outdoors, TAAA members will be providing solar observing during the day and switch over to night sky wonders in the evening. Should be an exciting event! If you are in the area, drop in!

I have the truck loaded with the 60mm Lunt and 10" SCT for daytime solar and 18" Teeter, 10" SCT, and 90mm ShortTube for night at the Pima Community College East Campus. Grandson Stephen from Colorado Springs will help with the scopes, and granddaughter Haley has come down from Phoenix to help wife Susan with the indoor setups at the PCC Student Center. Astronomy Magazine editorial staff will be here as well, and lots of stuff going on. We should have quite a few telescopes from Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association for day and night visitors. I'm a bit disappointed that there seems to have been little advertising of the event, in competition with the annual Gem and Mineral Show and the annual Tucson Rodeo Days and also some downtown science events. Weather should be good but windy.

If you're in Arizona, stop by; it will be like a one-day Grand Canyon Star Party with indoor show and tell as well.
