While I was looking at the near full moon tonight I noticed only what I would describe as black fingers growing across my field of view. The longer I say there the longer they became. Any ideas? When I loosened and rotated my eyepiece the black stayed in the same spot and reappeared when I switched eyepieces.

No, I just turned my cooling fan on to see if that helps.

Are you using a reflector at low power? The moon's brightness can make your pupil constrict so that the secondary obstruction takes up a large portion of the light entering the eye. Back your eye away from the eyepiece and see if you can see the moon with a big black spot in the middle where your eye goes.

Those issues baffle and frighten the best of us.
Repeatedly in my case.

Yeah, I thought it sounded familiar. I can't tell you how many times I've done that.
Some of the most amazing dark lanes in the Milky Way turned out to be trees ...

I recommend moving the telescope out and away from being under any trees. All trees that I know of spit sap. It can speckle your mirror, and almost be unnoticed. If you get sap on your mirror, you should clean it immediately after your viewing session.
