Hi folks, new on site and first posting,
Q. for you Experten. I have a (small) collection of Bausch and Lomb/Criterion eyepieces from several sources of Ebay. 4mm orthoscopic, 7mm ASP, 18mm ASP and 30mm ASP plus a Barlow signed 'CP-4'. Try as I may I am having difficulty (or should that be joy) looking for any info. What I would like know is manufacturing period by Criterion and after when Bausch and Lomb took over, what other's are there in the range and are they any good and worth anything. In fact any information would be great but I guess the name of the designer is lost in some black hole... Tell u what, a nod in the direction of a review in 'Sky and Telescope' would be great. (Its only the eyepieces am interested in, not the telescopes, not yet...)

Thank you for your welcome message and link (I have visited that one, very good it is too but nothing about eyepieces) I have heard a lot about the Cloudy Nights. Well named for were I live, its nearly always cloudy!

Hi Martin, welcome to Cloudy Nights! I am interested in your question as well. I have acquired a number of Criterion eyepieces: The Criterion/B&L ASP 30mm, 18mm, and 12.7mm; Criterion AR 18mm and 9mm, and Orthos 6mm and 4mm. They are all quite nice eyepieces. Only the ASP has the B&L designation on it so I wonder if that is their design. I've never learned what ASP stands for. (My wild guess is "Achromatic Symetrical Plossl".)

Most of these EP's have a small circle with a Y in it, Japanese trademark.
Who this is has been discussed here on CN but unknown.
I have a few and find them very nice.
I think that B&L purchased Criterion in the early 1970's.

We call it a "Y" but it looks to me to be circle trisected into three equal parts. One thing I've noticed, these Criterion eyepieces seem to be threaded for filters but the diameter is slightly larger so modern 1.25" filters will not thread on.

Anyone have any information about the 12.7mm A.S.P. Spectrum Dispersion eyepiece?
I have one ... was interested in when it was offered and how long, how much it sold for back then, how many may have been made (is it rare?), etc.

here's a set from Jon. I use this as a reference.
The earlier eyepieces were labeled CRICO for Criterion.Company. Then labeled CRITERION, then B&L CRITERION.

Actually it was the early 80's when B&L bought Criterion.
The later B&L scopes were actually totally revamped and were quite good. They were Named the Pro models, the 6001 and 8001 were as good as anything Celestron or Meade were making optically.
The 4000's were very hit and miss, I have always liked the "look and feel" of them but found them optically to be a real game of chance. If you get a good one they were pretty nice, they had a tiny secondary obstruction and were F-12.
They had optical coatings that were not quite as good as the 2045 Meade 4" scopes and even tho the secondary s on the Meades were much larger they were still brighter side by side at the same power.
I found the eyepieces to be pretty sharp in the center of the field but they suffer from somewhat of a Fish bowl effect in the 30mm eyepieces, that is some major curving of the field. I have seen them actually selling for quite a bit more than I would think they were worth.
The rather unique (red) anodized 1 1/4" solar filter was quite good and safe for viewing if you can find one.
They did not bring the filter focused on the glass element
resulting in fracture and failure others suffered from.
Views were very good and a comfortable brightness.
I wouldn't use them in a Schmidt tho, gets way too hot
in there, reflectors and refractors were fine.
All my opinions here were formed by actual hands on experience. I still have a very acceptable 4000 B&L,
and an Optically and cosmetically wonderful Criterion DX6
6" Dynamax, along with about 10 original eyepieces and Barlow used in a backup roll.
I hope this has helped.

I read somewhere it was Asymetric Super Plossl, but can't find the reference now...

All I can tell you for sure is we bought all of our eyepieces from Japan. I have a couple of unique ones from my time there - I'll post a picture a little bit later.

i have 2 criterion eyepieces.a A.R.12.7mm,and a K40mm.that came with a 1971 circa criterion dynamax 8 sct.i find them.outstanding eyepieces.
