I wonder how they use it in orbit? You sure couldn't use any of the conventional alignment choices.

It looks like they plan to use it as a BIG telephoto lens to take pictures of the earths features.

Actually not too big (well focal length wise) ... it will only be operating at around 500mm ... but the big deal is the very fast f ratio (f2.1) with that wide fov.
Fast shutter speeds and lots of data with each shot is going to mean big sharp images of terrestrial stuff.

I think it is set up to slew at the same time to track the Earths rotation better as well. Be very useful at night. I wonder whether they removed the IR filter from the 7D to enable a wider spectrum?

I find all this fascinating. Back in the day of "Stereoscopic Imaging" w/ film (50s & 60s), my Dad worked as a photo interpretor on various project in eastern Europe. It's amazing how far things advanced since then!

Bill,
I'll bet your father got to work with some absolutely awesome optical equipment.
In the 70s and 80s we used to see some amazing lenses show up in the surplus shops. These lenses were supposed to have come out of a variety of surveillance type of products used by various government agencies.
For a taste of what they are doing today (well at least what was being done a few years ago) look up Gorgon Stare and ARGUS-IS.
It's really interesting to watch the technology go from restricted knowledge intelligence gathering and trickle down to geo mapping and the like in only a matter of a few years.

I don't think he work much with the imaging equipment itself, just analyzed the images taken.

Colonel Hadfield received an inquiring Tweet from Star Trek's Captain Kirk in January here.
It seems to have started a friendly collaboration and both have a scheduled phone conversation planned for February 7th at 10:30am EST, with details here.
Isn't William Shatner is Canadian too?

Col. Hadfield is posting earth pictures daily on his Facebook page. He must be using the scope for these images due to the magnification and HD quality. If you have a Facebook account, it's worth checking out.
