Aluminium mirror cell
      #5649503 - 01/28/13 11:38 PM Attachment (62 downloads)

For the last year I've been puttering my way through making a 200mm f/13 newt. Well, I've reached a milestone of sorts, in that I've practically finished the main mirror cell, and I thought I'd share.

Because it's a full thickness mirror, I decided that the cell should be light-weight and let air to circulate freely behind/over the primary, so I eventually settled on a hollow sandwich construction which I hope will allow this to occur.

A full sequence of how is was made is in my gallery

Congratulations. That is a lot of glass and should be a lot of telescope. Will you be resting it on 3 points? How about edge support? Will it be alt/az mounted?

Hi there David - yes, it is a lot of telescope *lol* Long story short, I was planning selling up my small house with no garden, to somewhere with a better view of the skies, and decided to start building the telescope that I wanted to use. However, recession, redundancy and everything else happened, so now it looks like I'm staying put, studying as a "mature student", building a giant telescope!

The cell will have 3-point support and I've just cut out the edge supports, so tomorrow I'll look to attaching them. Next I have to make the push-pull bolts and then attach the cell to the backplate.

As for mounting the entire beastie - yes, it will be an alt-az. I've followed an interesting thread on here where a chappie made a 10". I'm still mulling around ideas at the moment, but then that's half the fun of making a scope :-)

Thanks everyone - when I make some decent progress I'll put up a thread about the foolhardiness of building such a long unwieldy telescope >:-)
