Hi i have just talen delivery of an LX200 12" GPS. the AutoStar version at present is 4.2g. i have tried to update, but when i open up the Update Programme, it just crashes. i am running the software on an Getac S400 with an I5 chip. connection is through a USB to Serial converter. direct connection to the RS232 port does not work for some reason. if anyone can offer suggestions as to what i am doing wrong, this would be a great help.
many thanks. Keith Scotland

Gday Keith
4.2g is the latest firmware released, so it is up to date. That said, Starpatch ( freeware ) is a much better updater for the LX200GPS firmwares, as it has much more robust port handling and error checking, and allows dynamic selection of patches, if you choose to load any. It should work with a true COM port with no problems. As to the USB2Ser converter, what brand is it?, as many brands dont do a true conversion, and in download mode with the Meade scopes, some can misbehave.

Re the USB converter, look at the driver it uses, as that will normally tell you who's chipset is in it. Belkins are notoriously unreliable when in download mode with a Meade scope. As to updating with Starpatch, download and install the app. Select the handbox type. Ask the app to check for updates and it will grab the latest rom and patch files. If you want to apply any of the patches, select the *.spf file, else just select the rom If patching, just select the options you want using the checkboxes. Hit go.

If its a prolific, then with the latest drivers, it should be OK, as i have several prolific based units and all work in download mode with no probs. Based on your real Com port not even working with ASU, i suggest trying to connect using Starpatch with both the Com port and the usb2ser. I reckon they may both just work. If so, something probably went wrong with the ASU install, but i cant help there as i really dont understand how ASU works, or what it needs ( like dot net etc ). Starpatch "just works" for anything i have had to do.
