Scope Handle
      #5652627 - 01/30/13 04:00 PM

I was wondering if any of you out there could suggest a nice handle to attach to my refractor rings to provide some ease in carrying and mounting the scope. I'm interested mainly in a handle in production, not a homemade item, although, I admit, there are some ingenious folks out there who would have a good solution.

I once had an ES 152AR scope and I loved the cradle/handle combo and was wondering if there were any aftermarket items in production. I currently have a six-inch Istar refractor which is a substantial scope and would like to have something to hang on to when mounting/dismounting it. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Vixen Refractor Scope Carry Handle....says $29.95. Appears it attaches to the scope ring.

Hope this helps.

ScopeStuff has a mounting rail that works good for a handle also . Though it isn't as ergo as the Vixen handle .

It's hard to tell from the picture but I don't think the Vixen handle would be strong enough for a six-inch scope.

I'd probably get something like a dovetail rail and use that as the handle

A piece of 1" wide webbing, sewing machine, sew loops on ends, slide onto/over rings, tighten down rings..instant, light, inexpensive grab "handle"...flexible/soft to boot!

I've emailed Explore Scientific to see what they have to say. I would imagine, from their perspective, that the challenge would be in producing something to accommodate different spacing between rings. Maybe their cradle will fit my scope. That would be nice.

Too bad you require store bought manufactured. I nice piece of hardwood, domestic or exotic, shaped to your hand could be real nice attached to the top of the rings. Padauk, Apple, Cherry, ZebraWood .... lots of choices. As mall 1X1x12 inch piece would not be very expensive. I made one from bird's eye maple and it looked real nice on my ED100 (matched the gold of the scope) until some one begged it off of me.

The ScopeStuff mounting rail has slotted or what you might call elongated holes so it can be utilized on a variety of ring spacing .
I put one on my SN8 solely for the purpose of a handle . It helps greatly getting the tube up on the EQ mount .

Had another read of your post and you say you have an Istar, those have black tubes do they not? A local woodworker might trade you an Ebony handle for a peek through your telescope.

I'm not opposed to a nice option like you suggest, it's just that I don't have the tools to make it.

Yes, black tube. Maybe I'll have to search for a woodworker and work out a deal of some kind.

I have a handle on my 10" Discovery Dob scope & it's quite handy for a 60+ pound OTA. I used it only twice thank goodness.

Jim

While those would probably work, I am hoping for something that will attach to the rings.

Check out these Trunk Handles.
A buddy of mine uses one for his 5" apo. Some washers over/under the mounting hole of the handle and it attaches securely with the usual hex screws (1/4-20's?).

I found this handle by Berlebach.

Looks like it might just be what I need.

A virtual trip to McMaster Carr, will let you pick out this one, which I've added to my 10". This handle can be added to a dovetail rail (as shown), or to a set of rings... It's load-rated, and is capable of picking up your OTA, mount, and all your accessories, if you can find a way to hang them from the thing...
