Is there any significant difference between the SBIG ST-i color version vs mono version when used primarily for autoguiding? Does one work better than the other for autoguiding, or is there no real difference?

I would believe the ST-i mono is more sensitive and would be easier overall to find a guiding star.

Thanks for your reply. Has that been your experience with mono guiders? I did notice on the forum that most people using the ST-i for guiding were using the mono version, that is what prompted my question.
I noticed one dealer was offering the color version for $100 off on thier web site.

Just like any CCD, ST-i mono is more sensitive; for guiding mono is the way to go. Some discussion here.... Thx
Note: There is a guiding kit... as well.

color has a bayer matrix on top of the pixels, it said that this layer block essential light content.

Additionally, I suspect that the Bayer matrix might play havoc with subpixel guiding algorithms. Mono all the way.

I suspect that as well. I always had drift problems when I was guiding with a DSI color that went away when I switched to a DSI mono. ...Keith

In my mind, this begs the question of the purpose of the ST-i color, and why SBIG would even offer it? Is it a decent color planet camera at least?

.. there's a reason why the color version is cheaper...
I think advertising these as planetary cameras is just marketing at best. You could probably buy a Canon DSLR and get better movie results for the same cost.
*I do love my ST-i mono for guiding. Moving to the ST-i and an OAG was one of the best decisions I made.

Well, as someone who has actually used both, I can say that:
1) The mono version is as expected somewhat more sensitive.
2) The color version is more than capable of guiding as well.
With my ST-i color, unbinned 4 second exposures, I get down to about magnitude 11 with a 50mm finder. Finding guide stars is not a problem.
Imaging M81 the other day, both M81 and M82 were easily visible in the ST-i color.
If you are going to strictly use it as a guide camera and you have the extra 100$, by all means buy the mono version.
But guiding with the color version has not been a problem for me.

In practice, this has not been the case for me. I am guiding with a Orion 50mm guider with helical focuser. I image with a Powerstar III c8 running at 1260mm.
