Amen to that.
Per aspera ad astra - but this particular aspera could have been avoided.
God, what a horrible day that was.

End of January and early February are a tragic week for NASA from Apollo 1, Challenger, and Columbia.

The people working on this program were the best of the best. But heck, that could not see how dangerous an oxygen rich pressurized environment would be???!!!
Russia also had to learn the hard way when a pressurized oxygen environment of a test chamber burst into flame when an astronaut inadvertently tossed an alcohol swab onto a hot plate.

And Grissom recognized the problem, but didn't mention it for fear of getting bumped from the crew. This was related much later by one of the other Apollo astronauts. (Source - the DVD "Shadow of the Moon"; I'm not making this up!)

Tragedy. One of the 3 astronauts that bore my family name (no relation whatever as far as anyone knows) was my personal hero. Never forget.

Those at NASA who saw the whole thing going on in the capsule live on their TV screen and heard the screaming will be marked forever.

went to the astronaut memorial at arlington. It is really close to the tomb of the unknown soldier. I highly recommend a trip there to anyone.
