I didn't know where to post this but did anyone else see a "star" brighten to about Jupiter magnitude and then fade (near Cassiopeia)? This occurred around 7PM Pacific. I was driving. It was not an airplane. Perhaps satellight rotating? It was pretty bright though. Thanks for any possible explanation.

If we are talking about a single brightening-peak-fading cycle of around 30-45 seconds the description and time of evening would pretty well match a glint off one of the host of Iridium satellites. These sightings are fairly common from any particular location.

You can go to heavens above or calsky web sites to get predictions. You can enter the location and time of your event and see which satellite it was. I did not know your location so could not do it. Iridium flares happen often with up six or seven even in one night. While neat they are a bother for those taking astro pics. William

Probably a satellite like Iridium, which can get very bright. They can be brighter than Venus. It could also be the International Space Station.

I have witnessed a flare in the area you described. I was amazed at how long it lasted. I thought it was a bolide meteor, but the general consensus was that it was an Iridium flare. ---- Dave

My Starry Night indicates there was an Iridium flare in the vicinity of Cassiopeia at that time.
