Tasco 15K Solarama 80mm Great Find
      #5657697 - 02/02/13 08:42 AM Attachment (62 downloads)

Found this Tasco 15k 80mm f/l 1200mm on the New York city(Queens)Craigslist not to far from home. What caught my eye is not only the wood box but the telescope in the box had all the original packaging. This scope looks like it was just purchase and never opened. So I gave the seller a call and setup a appointment to come and look at the scope, the other good news is I did not have to travel to Queens to see it, the bridge tolls alone would have been 23.00,Turns out the seller was moving to NJ just 20 min away. When I got to the house the Seller took me to the garage, large wooden box there upon inspection is was as I suspected in new condition with all the original packaging there. the cardboard wrapping still on the tripod wood legs and tube w/mount in plastic wrap.Oddly enough I asked the seller about the history of the scope. She told me that her husband worked in construction and at a job found this scope abandoned is a house. She never used the scope all these years she told me it looked to complicated. Anyway I did not argue about the selling price this one sold for $200.00.
Wow.... just going thru the box just to check to see what's their what do I find in the bottom a #1602K clock drive !!!so this scope would most likely be a 15K not the 10K as first suspected

In this photo I used the mount from my Sears Discoverer 4454 I really did not want to disturb the wrapping at this point but you get the idea.

Bruce,
Is the box not as long and taller than the normal ones I've seen for the 10 series or is the picture shrunk that way? What does the K stand for?

Ken,
well I had to up date the model number on this scope has a lot to do with your question about the what the "K" means. Just going thru the wood box in the bottom I found a #1602K Tasco clock drive. These scope were sold some time around 1978 give or take a few years the basic model was the 10K the 15K came with the #1602K clock drive. the wood box measures 36L X 17WX 11 1/2 H.

Great story! A friend on this forum bought a mint Unitron refractor for $100 from a demolition company that had been hired to demolish a house. Just before swinging the wreaking ball, the contractor decided to have one last look in all the closets, and found a single wooden box!

Beautiful, thanks for posting! I tried to sell mine, but apparently some folks want these for almost free (i.e. I guess I'll be keeping mine and trying to make it better.) How long is your counter-weight bar? 26 cm or 21 cm? (my Sears 60 mm refractor bar fits/screws in, but it's only 21 cm, I'd love to find a longer one if somebody has one available.) Do you happen to have a pic of the clock drive available too? (don't un-pack it to get one, just curious if a pic happens to be available.)

Jason H.

I too have a 10K it was among the loaners my club had which werent being used, so I put a bid in and got it on mine the tripod was long gone and replaced with a very solid wooden pier, for the drive I used a standard dk5 drive unit and motor, I just had to bore out the hole in the motor bracket to fit the mount, works very well. I was watching jupiter last night, saw europa come out from the edge of jupiter, then watched its shadow cross the planet and was rewarded with the appearance of the red spot. I was using an old binocular eyepiece which gave me about 5" eye relief and about 20mm fl so 60x magnification.

Jason,
I'm posting a photo of the clock drive #1602K that came with the scope.Funny thing about a year ago on Ebay, Telescope Warehouse ( Bill Vorce) was selling some old new stock of these clock drives they were selling for 25 30 bucks. The box says 1986 Tasco Sales, Inc.Miami,Florida I purchased several of these but for some reason on many of the bids I was the only bidder. I would have though these would have gone like hot cakes with the telescope collectors.Buy the way I think I have the shaft your looking for I will send you a PM.
Bruce

Great story Bruce. Just like my Selsi. Tasco's drive looks different than my Celestron brand drive. It too had to be bored out to fit. These scopes track very efficiently by the way. Does yours reverse and also have fast and slow controls or is it just a plain motor drive? Mike

It's just a simple AC drive uses the clutch lever on the mount to engage a disengage. It's only going to track as good as the time it takes to align the mount up properly that's always the fun part on a cold February night
