Nikon 10x50 extreme new mod.
      #56601 - 02/17/04 06:41 PM

just got in a pair of nikon extreme 10x50's, they replace the older action mod, did a star test last night and compared then with a pair of swift 820 audubon's minolta activa and orion ulraviews, all were wide angle .the nikons were brighter better contrast and not as much distortion at the edge.pinpoint stars, they are now waterproof fogproof nitogen purged and O ring sealed, they also have a 3 position twist up eyecup and 17mm eye relief. got them at adorama for 139.00 plus shipping.i was so happy with these for the low price that i order a 2nd pair of 8x40 extreme's.i really think they are the best buy for a porro prism type for 100 to 200.00 bino. i think nikon did there home work on this one.i have tried alot of binos. regards john cota

John,

One of these two models might just be the answer to the prayers of Johnny on the "best for $200" poster.

Regards -- Kenny.

Hi John,

Hello and welcome! It's good to see you here. I know you have an extensive collection of binoculars and I am sure you'll have a lot to share with us.

We were discussing Super Wide Angle 6X30mm on another thread today. Just wondering if you have more comments about your Orion Expanse 7X32 SWA? Do you find it bright enough to use as an extra wide angle finder? Is the 10mm ER acceptable?

Hi John:

Thanks for your post. You mention the Nikon EX has an advertised eye relief of 17 mm. Do you wear glasses? If so, could you see the whole field of view? I am asking this because sometimes the advertised ER may be a little different from the real one.

I was considering buying a Minolta Activa 10x50 to start looking at stars. The Minolta costs the same as the Nikon at Adorama. Now I am not sure which one (Minolta or Nikon) to get. Any comments from anyone?

Thanks - Subhasis Laha

i have had both the minolta activa and the nikon extreme.i wear glasses sometimes and i could easly see the full field in the nikon extreme. they also had sharper optics and a little better edge correction. very happy with the nikons and still think they are the best buy for the price. adorama has the 10x50 in stock but the other sizes are back ordered,i got the 8x40's from moosegear. regards john cota
