Micro Color Splitters - New Color Technology new
      #5662831 - 02/05/13 01:54 AM Attachment (12 downloads)

Panasonic as invented a new way to create one-shot color from monochrome digital sensors.

The traditional Bayer color filter array is replaced with "Micro Color Splitters" that use diffraction.

More info here on my blog:

http://www.astropix.com/wp/2013/02/05/micro-color-splitters/

The Micro Color Splitters promises a 2x improvement in signal that was lost to the color filters in the Bayer array.

Jerry

i wonder if this is just a patent, or something in the lab, or something that's almost ready for mass production.

it's very interesting! hope something comes of it.

I'm trying to work out how RGB would be constructed from (White + Red) and (White - Red). But then again the left hand schematic only has Red and Green shown so I don't think the right hand schematic is the full story either

Non-Bayer is new!

Dpreview has a bit more detail on that diffraction design:
http://www.dpreview.com/news/2013/02/04/panasonic-promises-high-sensitivity-s...

From the article and more than 100 comments, it seems to be that people thinking there is step missing (from lab to mass production of commercial grade goods.)

So my take: glad to see progress in the making. But I will not halt my purchase of imaging related gears just because there is a (new) light at the end of that long tunnel.

I think this is great news for us, DSLR guys: if this technology becomes available in mass produced cameras, then mono ccds would lose its edge. Another reason not to switch to the dark side!
