I think Bob is looking for something that is not F/5 fast but pretty fast some it can be used as an RFT, (Richest Field Telescope).

Is there a price point? Is that why the op is not looking at ED scopes?

There is no price point that I know, there was an assumption of achromat from the outset. Whether than means an Orion 100mm F/6 that weighs under 8 lbs complete with rings and a 2 inch diagonal or something a bit fancier, I don't know.

Hi Guys, thanks for the back and forth. There's no price point, only that I already have a 127 triplet, and a 4" achromat would be lighter for both quick in and out of the house and mounting on the 11" SCT. Just was intrigued by a 4" size, and a nice GoTO mount. Like a 102SLT GoTo. See my original post....

I already have a Orion ST80, which I will sell, so I'm familiar with 'purple'.

Tom: good ideas, but on the mount, wouldn't the scope hit the base of the mount if pointed anywhere near zenith?

I wonder if there's any other 'or equal' to the ES 102? I like ES quite a lot, but always like to compare.

these parameters:
1. 4" Achromat, need it to be light
2. Somewhat fast, but not f/5...I have a semi APO filter and plan to use a dew shield cap stopped down for bright objects to cut the purple.
3. GoTo mount. Yes, for bright deep sky in my whiter than white back yard
4. Easily taken off mount to put on my CPC1100 as a RFT
5. Needs a 2" focuser, so I can use my good 2" diagonal and EPs.
6. Available, iow, not waiting forever to find a good used one.

Now I thought perhaps a Celestron 102 SLT. F6. Or what would you suggest? Don't want a 80mm or a 120ST. I've been looking for that Orion 100mm, but to no avail....
thanks
Bob

I've changed the parameters a bit.....see below.
these parameters:
1. 4" Achromat, need it to be light
2. Somewhat fast, but not f/5...I have a semi APO filter and plan to use a dew shield cap stopped down for bright objects to cut the purple.
3. GoTo mount. Yes, for bright deep sky in my whiter than white back yard
4. Easily taken off mount to put on my C14" GEM as a RFT
5. Needs a 2" focuser, so I can use my good 2" diagonal and EPs.
6. Colimatable if possible
7. Available, now, not waiting forever to find a good used one.

Now I thought perhaps a Celestron 102 SLT. F6. But that's not collimatable and the mount looks a little weak. I have an Atlas EQ-G, and while its not exactly a
grab n go, it would certainly be great. Or a ES DAR 102mm. What others would you suggest? Don't want a 80mm or a 120st.
thanks
Bob

And the seller does all 'private' listings and is quite an angry counter commenter on her negs and neutrals.

those comments are funny, but its not a high percentage. and why would the people on the other side of the ocean leave neg comments because of their countries customs, that person was what she said if they didn't communicate their displeasure before leaving comments like that.

Bob

Yesterday I saw one of the Orion 100mm F/6s on Astrmart for $250, it has a 2 speed Crayford and the collimateable cell. It seems like just what you want.

How about trying to find a Meade 102 ED? I have seen them sell for $350.00 in the last few months, I had one and it was great!

Can't help with the mount, but OPT is clearancing their Celestron 102mm f/9.8 NexStar OTAs right now. got mine for $59 + $18 shipping. Comes with a sidemount dovetail, no accessories. However, you can get it with accys for a little more.
