Pages: 1 Centaur Vendor Reged: 07/12/04 Loc: Chicago February New Moon Spotting       #5666229 - 02/06/13 11:16 PM Edit   Reply   Quote Quick Reply   It’s nearly time for my monthly New Moon spotting challenge, which becomes relatively easy for observers north of the tropics as we move toward the vernal equinox. A few North Americans may be able to sight the less than one-day-old Moon on February 10th when it will appear as a Lunar Boat, i.e. a U-shaped Moon. Some observers may set personal records. My more detailed article describing the waxing crescent Moon’s first appearance of the coming lunar month appears under the links for my preview graphics at www.CurtRenz.com/moon Photos and descriptions of the young Moon would be welcome additions to this thread. Please include your location, date, time and time zone. There was some haze along the horizon which the moon disappeared into at about 5:57 PM. I snapped a picture with my i-phone. Not sure if that curved patch of light is the moon but it is in the correct location relative to horizon and clouds. It is just below that thin strip of clouds. I suspect that is the Moon in your photo. Perhaps tomorrow you'll be able to meet the naked-eye challenge. I located it with binoculars, then got positive visual. Without finding it in binoculars first, there is no way I would have found that little sliver visually. Clouds closer to the western horizon were covering the Sun, making for much less glare. There is no doubt this a record for me. I am seeing a discrepancy between SkySafari and VMS. SkySafari gives the age at 1.8 days, while VMS indicates 1.4 days. Just got another visual at 5:25 PM CST. Very cool! The age of the Moon is traditionally measured from its geocentric longitudinal conjunction with the Sun. That last occurred on February 10 at 01:20 CST. So on February 11 at 17:00 CST the Moon was 1.65 days old. That means your two sources are almost equally inaccurate. While I was taking a walk, I photographed the Belt of Venus and the Earth's shadow and, on the way back to my house, I took a few shots of the young Moon. Later, I went to the ASH Naylor Observatory. As it was setting, I observed and photographed Mercury afocally through a 17" f/15 classical Cassegrain. A bit later I took some afocal shots of the setting Moon through the 5" f/5 finder scope. Stunning to see such a thin crescent. It's not something you would stumble upon if you weren't looking for it. The planet Mercury was a BIG help as a guide post. Knowing it was 9 degrees away and at roughly 45 degrees down and to the right helped keep the search pattern tight. The spotting was a personal best for all of us in the group.
