M42 on a difficult night new
      #5667936 - 02/07/13 10:00 PM

Last night was the first clear night in a month. I had planned on getting in 2 hours of M42. Unfortunately, conditions didn't allow that. Transparency was 2/5 at the beginning of the session and poor seeing was causing stars' FWHM to bounce around from 2.4 to 4.5 in BYEOS frame & focus. PHD struggled with the conditions. Then the clouds rolled in after only 32 minutes of lights. Despite all of that, I managed to get an image that, while not perfect, I was thrilled with from my red zone back yard.

That looks really good for such a short amount of time. I don't agree with the rating you got on Astrobin as I think your processing looks great with the amount of data you had to work with.

Thanks Warren, I've just started using PixInsight and I am struggling to climb the learning curve.

As far as AstroBin ratings, I've decided to ignore them. Some of my worst efforts have gotten 4 stars and some of my better efforts only one. It only matters if I like it.

Good mindset!

Agree with the sentiment about AB ratings.

That is a really nice image for the time! Certainly not over-processed which I think all too easy.

have you thought of giving startools a try?

That actually came out very nice, can always add more time to it later on if not satisfied with the results.

Yes, excellent job on the processing. Holds up all the way to full res. Lots of depth to the nebula and I like that you avoided the temptation to oversaturate the colors.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. I look back at the images I was producing a year ago when I first started dabbling in AP and I'm amazed at how far my skills have come. I am deeply addicted.

Jim - I used trial versions of Startools, Images Plus, and PixInsight. Pi edged out the other two for me. That's not to say I won't migrate to something else later. Especially since I'm constantly reprocessing images with new software and after I learn new techniques.

Good capture Mike. I think we were shooting on the same night!
