That sounds as if you think the Zeiss 8x56 is a piece of *BLEEP*, Glenn. Care to elaborate?

If a purchase is based on 'coolness', overlooking demonstrated optical imperfections, then it is truly a case of a fool being parted from his money. If an instrument having a large exit pupil is known to perform well only in brighter conditions where the observer's pupil stops down the system, then the extra aperture is really a waste, adding only needless mass.
If the desire is to observe boars fornicating at night, the most important quality is the suppression of veiling glare, which can be accomplished at very much reduced cost, not requiring the cachet of a brand name, or the 'coolness' of a Euro design.
maybe a little hard, but you bring up a good point about motivation of buyers to do what we do
is this worse than impulse buying, following the crowd, empty ads with pretty or popular faces, pride, ?
the bottom line is my enjoyment of use-the worse purchases I have made are items that everyone else loves, but I just do not like.
but you do have a point-divorse courts and used car lots are full of "coolness" items

edj, If you would only share a list of your instruments with the forum in your signature line, we could split it up among ourselves, come up with withering comments about each, and use each as an indicator of your flawed personality. I've been meaning to talk to you about that 10+15 especially....much too cool. Ron

I would hope that my flawed personality is too off topic for the TOS to allow.
or
we could have a forum" Personality flaws of CN members" dedicated to this with most flawed awards

Binoculars arrived today and first light at sundown for 30-40 minutes.
Binoculars arrived in good shape in Zeiss box and good padding and cardboard box from CameralandNY.
When I looked into ordering, most states 10-12 week delivery as special order. When I called Cameraland the sales person states let me ask the boss to call Zeiss and I will get back to you in 30 minutes. In 20 minutes they called back stating Zeiss had one and they could get it by the end of the month (this was 12/7) so I ordered and binocular arrived only a week or two late-6 weeks.
They came with ep covers, an ok strap, but no case. The rubber finish is shinny black, the focus nob is smaller than most binoculars.
Optics are very sharp with a "little" drop off at the edge, color on 1/2 moon shows a yellow-lime green ring simular to my miyauchi 100mg FLs and fuji 25x150s-noticeable but not a problem for me.
I enjoyed them, but longer length and smaller FOV may take a while to get use to, the neck strap is not adequate for me and I need to get a better strap for the 35 oz binocs or maybe a harness. Also need a case.
When I have time and experience, I will write a longer review comparing to SW 8.5x42s (nonSV); they look cool, feel cool, but maybe not enough for ME to look cool.

Thanks for your report edj.
They are very lightweight for a large roof prism bino.

Edj, A calm and modest first report, thank you. I look forward to what happens when you really put it to work. Its great focal ratio and optical simplicity hold out hope for very good things. Ron

Common Edj,
That was a nice distraction over at the 10x56 FL thread, but it's time you get back on this 8x56 Dialyt track again

when I review my binocular stable,
the fun binoculars
-pentax papillo 6.5x21
- miyauchi 5x32s
- leica duovid 10+15x50
are not the ones most would consider
the highest quality or most popular
the dialyts are fitting into that group
they are fun to use
(*maybe Ron above is right that it is just my flawed personality)
when I go to a big birding event where everyone has SW-SVs
I will be the lone individual/unique/odd one in the back
but overall I am pleased with them
except for today when it is raining
and they are not waterproof

seems more logical, reasonable, smart to go with the lattest 6mm zeiss

Good but old binoculars are satisfying in themselves, and sometimes reach a pinnacle of perfection in some way that has since been lost. They teach us how we got here, and ideally, provide a reasoned perspective of the optical craft, leading to a deeper and level headed appreciation for the latest stuff.
Like, when I come in off the deck with my 10x56, I'm doing the Funky Chicken around the kitchen a few times, but all in reasoned perspective. Ron

the Zeiss Comfort strap supplied with the dialyts was good quality,
but was less than comfort on my neck
advise on BirdForum led me to VeroVellini strap, which was better, but...
then tried a Crumpler Disgrase camera strap-closer
then settled on my old orange floating SW strap which works best
so
if you are in the birding woods, or a star party,
and see an old fat man with dialyts with a bright orange strap
-tell him if you think he looks cool
-pass him by if he looks like a fool recently parted from his money
edj
a happy fool who thinks he looks cool
