Hi all,
Somewhat shamefully I need to say that this is only my second ever comet, with Halley's being my first,
Still, better late than never.
Comet Lemmon has been tracing a path across the southern sky, cruising through Crux last month, close to the South Celestial pole, and very soon to be within spitting distance of the mighty 47Tuc and the LMC on its way to its perihelion and the glare of the sun.
At the moment Lemmon is around magnitude 5 and getting brighter. Conditions were good last night considering Lemmon isn't too high in the sky. An oh-so-faint hint of a tail though did come and go through my 8" dobbie. I included its trace detection on a couple of the "time lapse" sketches as I couldn't quite make it out by the third rendition.
I have to say that I am most impressed with my 5mm Hyperion. Of all the Hyperions I've tried, the 5mm is the only one that's been good in my fast Newt's. Tonight I pushed it to 320X with an ED barlow and it gave me such a lovely image.
The time lapse show's Lemmon's position over just a tick more than an hour going from right to left.
Object: Comet Lemmon Scope: 8" f/4 push-pull dob Gear: 5mm Hyperion plus 2X ED barlow, 320X Date: 9th Jan., 2013 Location: Sydney, Oz Duration: time lapse of just over 1hr, 9:15pm to 10:30pm local time. Media: Soft pastel on A4 size black paper.
FOV: approx 11'
Clear skies and sharp pencils,
Alex.

Very nice! I'm jealous as its not visible from my locale yet. Hoping to get a look at this comet later.
Excellent sketch showing the motion.

Alex,
Very fine captures over that time. It is clipping along. Excellent work. At least we get to see it in the north with your fine captures.

Thank you for that sketch. Lemmon is not observable for us "northern lights", so I have at least an impression how it looks like.

Alex,
Well done! and thanks for the view. Tracking motion is one of the fun parts of comet observing--Comet Lemmon appears to be moving right along. Hope you get to see it again when it goes past your southern showpieces.

Thank you all for your comments.
There's a couple more comets that are looking promising to become quite spectacular for towards the end of the year. Escpecially Comet ISON is having predictions of being NO fainter than Venus and AS BRIGHT as the full Moon. Either way, one to really look forward to in November.
