First B33 with D5100 new
      #5668917 - 02/08/13 12:30 PM Attachment (47 downloads)

This is my second attempt at the Flame Nebula and B33. Its my first with my D5100 modified by Brent Oliver. I took 14x600 lights. I was trying to show more detail in the area under B33. Probably overexposed and/or overprocessed a bit. I'll play with it more later but wanted to get something up as its been months since my last image. As usual, I appreciate any comments and/or suggestions.

Details look great, maybe a little overprocessed but still nice!

Hi Tim - Yes, a little overprocessed for me but still looking very good. Are you happy with the mod?

Thanks kbastro, Warren, George and Terry.

I framed it so that B33 was angled higher than normal as I wanted to see if the modded D5100 would bring out much of the detail below B33. When I processed I concentrated on bringing out that detail and as a result over processed the whole image. However, I must admit that I usually like images a bit over processed- even my daytime pictures. Probably stems from my psychedelic days in the 60's.

When I showed my wife - she usually just says thats nice and goes back to whatever she was doing - she said that it was gorgeous and we should hang it on the wall! So, while StarTools has some nice masking features that I could use to process the the different area seperately, I hesitate to make too many changes to the only image that my wife really told me that she loved.

Terry, I'm happy with my modded D5100 so far. I've been birding - going again today - and used it satisfactorily during the day using CWB. My problem has been the constant clouds that haven't allowed me to test it for AP. I did manage 2 images. The one you see here and I got some 5 minute images of M42. I haven't had a chance to process them yet but should over the next few days. That should give me a better idea.

Hi Tim,

If your wife is happy that is all that matters! They indulge our little "hobby"!

Best,

George

Very true George. Although my wife calls it an obsession. If we don't get more clear nights soon, I'll reprocess it using masks and give her a choice of which one she likes the best. Can't lose - that way:)

Tim, that's amazing! I agree it's slightly over-done . But, it really is beautiful!

Beautiful image Tim. May I ask, what focal length telescope/lens did you use? And do you use your modified Nikon for any daytime "normal" photography or videos? I'm considering having Brent modify my Canon 7D. Thanks.

Thanks Jerry. I used my Skywatcher 120mm Ed f=900mm f=7.5. I told Brent that I wanted to use my camera for daytime as well and he did a Baader mod. My autofocus and lens cleaning features continue to work. The only change is that I use a Custom White Balance. I also use the camera for birding pictures. I've only been on one birding trip - since the mod - but with CWB set the pictures were great.

He is Brent Oliver. He is a member of this forum as Nofxrx. His web site is http://hyperdslr-mods.blogspot.com/

Most guys just do Canons. However, he did a great job with my Nikon D5100. Nice guy to work with. You will have to ask if he does Sonys.

Thanks Sunblack for the suggestion. I'm away for awhile but when I return home - I'll try playing around with this some more.
