M51 - the Whirlpool Galaxy (yet another reprocess)
      #5671709 - 02/10/13 01:17 AM

Here's a reprocessing of M51 from 2011. With this reprocessing, I added some unguided 75 second subs I had captured in April 2011, plus some additional data I had captured in July 2011 to give a total integration time of 17 3/4 hours:

High Resolution Version and more image details available at http://www.astronomersdoitinthedark.com/index.php?c=113&p=396.

This image was made from 179 subs of 3 minutes each plus 135 subs of 75 seconds all at ISO 1600 using a Canon 20Da through an orange tube Celestron C-8 with a Lumicon telecompressor at f/5.5 (1100mm). Guiding on 3 minute subs was with an 80mm f/11 guide scope, Orion SSAG, and Phd Guiding. 75 second subs were unguided. Reprocessing was done using Images Plus 5.0, Photoshop CS5, Carboni's Actions, Gradient Xterminator, Registar, and Focus Magic using my DSLR-LLRGB workflow.

For those who are curious, the previous processing (with total exposure of 10 1/2 hours) is available here.

Thanks for looking!

Hi Scott,

awesome image of the whirlpool-galaxy. Well procecced as usual! As me as 20Da owner you, what you have with that "old" DSLR, which was still a jewel for deep-sky imaging.

Best: Bruno

Thank you very much for your generous comments Al, Warren, tomn2, Alex, and Bruno.

@Bruno - I ended up having big problems with the 20Da as it developed the "dark river" problem (where it had a huge dark horizontal band across the middle of the image). It made processing very difficult, as darks, flats, etc. did not correct the dark river. I finally have figured out a decent way to flatten the images taken with the camera in a manner that doesn't damage the underlying data too badly. This is one of the reasons I'm reprocessing so many of these old images.

I gave the camera to a friend, who understood the limitations of the camera (and he had no objections to the price!). He's used it a little bit, but I haven't seen any of his pics yet. I've been much happier with my modded 450D - much lower noise, better red sensitivity, Live View, USB control, etc. Alas, the old 20Da gave me a lot of good use.
