Got my first glimpse of the Horsehead tonight and did a quick sketch to go along with the experience. Full details of the observation are here:

Probably going to do a little more work on this sketch tomorrow. Make the stars more pinpoint and get the right levels of brightness on the nebulae...NGC 2023 should be brighter and the HH nebulosity should be dimmer, brightening towards the North. Using a better picture of the sketch will probably help with contrast as well.

That is a terrific observation, Derek, and not an easy feat in an 8" instrument. Nicely done. If you already mentioned it in the observing report (and I missed it) I apologize, but did you use an H-beta filter? Just curious. Some people swear by them. I sold mine years ago after having little luck with it.

I did not use an H Beta filter. I'm considering buying one at some point, but I'd like to give one a try first before I spend the money on a nice one. I've heard you either hate em or love em, so I'd be interested to see which side of that I fall on.

Derek,
Thanks for posting this sketch--a very tough target (no matter what you hear). I think you've inspired several of us to turn our attention to this subject.
