I am being offered back a 12" f/5 dob and I have a 1999 Kia Sephia. Tube is 57" long. Back seat inside width is only 55-56" maximum. I was thinking of folding the backseat forward, if it can be, and sliding in through the trunk OR lying the front seat back, but it doesn't lie back fully. I live in Smyrna, TN and the person who has it lives in Lexington, KY- a distance of about 230 miles. With the scope weighing 84# plus 60" wheelbarrow handles and 14" wheels I added to it (that can all be removed), it would probably be better to drive than to ship - did an approximation through UPS and it said about $80 and that's the low end; high end was $371 and both prices would have it to me in one day but then it would have to be packed. Driving would be cheaper. I even checked into renting a U-haul and an SUV for the trip. Both would be about $200 or so with mileage. I was thinking of meeting him halfway but what to do then? I cannot pull a trailer with this car. Ideas?

I too own a Kia Sephia ( my condolences) but I easily fit my 72" long 10 wide reflector tube in it complete with tall dob mount. I first move the passenger seat as far back as will allow then I lean the seat back as far as it can lay gown then I open the passenger for window with the door fully open and load the tube into the car with the mirror end down where the feet normally go and the secondary all the way back by the rear window tho not touching it. My dobs unit lays on its side across the backseat. There.
Your tube obviously is wider but you should have no trouble with this arrangment. The laying across the backseat is not practical or possible for you.
Charles Im glad they are offering it back but why are they offering it back? Thanks Glad its working out. I'd personally go drive and get it. By the way - at least with my long reflector no car is too small in this configuration - not a Kia Sportage either, Toyota Corolla as well.
Pete

Also with a back seat width of 56" and a tube length of 57" all you would have to do is angle the tube a little to get it to fit.

You have to angle it more than a little because as you angle it, the horizontal length grows because the diagonal/hypotenuse is longer than the length of the tube.
I am sure that Charles can find a way to retrieve his scope with his car. One time, I was able to fit a 75 inch long 15 inch diameter tube in Ford Escort along with the equatorial mount.

I thought about the front seat last night. It SHOULD work. It is being offered back to me because he isn't using it nearly as much as he thought he would because of working nights. Also, he has indicated that it is too large than his physicality can provide. I will try, measure, and let you know. Thanks All.

Charles:
You will get it one way or the other. Sliding passenger seat back and putting in full recline as Pete suggested ought to work.
If there isn't room for the assembled base, you could disassemble it...

Charles just remember to roll down that passenger side door window. I always need to jockey the mirror end through there to get it situated across the seats, to the back then seated next to me. It's simple but its a slight jostle to do it. The other guys mentioned just tilting it up as it lays across the back seat and that's a simpler thing it would seem. Either way you have options. And on the ride home you get to apologize to it

I did all the moving of the seats and did the measuring and it WILL work. All I need now is to get the money by next Sunday to get up there and back. Hopefully it will be next Sunday. Sunday is the only day we are BOTH free!

wow, you could have them pull the mirror/cell, the spider/secondary and focuser mail it and buy the wood and have it cnc'd so it would fit in your car very nicely for that price.

Will there be this hassel every time you go out to observe or will you be using this scope from home? This is something to think about.
If it is just about getting the scope home, how about ripping the guts out of the tube then lashing the tube to the roof of the car? Wrap it in a tarp and you are good to go.

Charles used to own this scope, I think he uses it at home so transportation is a one time deal.
We should all be so lucky.

I managed a Z10 in a Ford Focus. The minivan was finally (six months at the shop-long story-that guy went out of business)repaired in time to haul the Z12 last year.
A Z12 in that little Kia is a shoehorn job.
Drive carefully Charles, the scope you save may be your own!.

I donno, you may be better off strapping the Kia to the scope. Maybe you can use the GPS from the Kia to help you align the scope....

Would that be considered a form of GOTO? Should it be allowed to use GPS, when driving the Kia and Z12 to a dark sky to do a Messier Marathon?

Yes I was. John Kramer, CN's "geminijk", lives near me and is a friend. He was gracious enough to drive me up there in his PT Cruiser. It was about a 3 hour round trip. This was done yesterday (02/17). First "new" view was the Orion Nebula!

Yep! That car can handle a 16" Meade Starfinder! So can a Chevy HHR, but not quite as well.
