Conditions were OK--not great--but I'll take what I can get. Good astronomy weather has been scarce here. The temp was 21°F (-6°C) but with no wind so it didn't feel too bad. Oval BA was faint but there (although the whole area looked blocky). Something new was the prominent bright spot smack in the middle of the South Equatorial Belt (SEB). The large festoon bases on the south edge of the North Equatorial Belt (NEB) were also prominent. Other notes are with the sketch. Good luck with your own weather and Jupiter observations. The King is high in prime time for us northern hemisphere observers right now. At he te I had the convincing impression it was two spots with the smaller preceding it. Come to find out the imaging forum proved my detection false. Alas you have it here - singularly correct and I like the wide bases to the festoons. That dark belt over the GRS really has emboldened. - it was barely a hint. on thanksgiving. Nice productive work Mike. Hopefully the warmer months for Saturn at prime time will give us some 7 seeing or better. I haven't been following imagery of Jupiter so the bright spot in the SEB was a total surprise to me. The very dark section of the South Temperate Belt seems to be following Oval BA past the Great Red Spot. Things really zoom around in those Jovian cloudtops. You picked up all the main features on this side of the planet. That bright oval on the SEB has been around for a while, I first saw it on the 28th of Dec. It has persisted and I wonder what will become of it. I know what you mean about the weather. I've been lucky to have many clear nights but not many with good seeing. I think I need to lower my standards for seeing in regards to sketching. Even though during this time I've made many transit timings of features and plan to make a map and or drift charts of the features. Thanks for posting. It's been so long since we've had decent weather here (my last Jupiter obs was 2 Dec. 2012) that I wasn't aware of this white spot in the SEB--hard to miss, tho. Dean, I know what you mean about not sketching when the seeing is poor--I have a threshold that must be met before I will take the time and effort to do more than make log notes. Even still, it's good you were able to make transit timings--that is useful. I think Oval BA is ~140° and the GRS is ~188° at this time. And of course the bright spot in the SEB has to be ~153°. Is that close to your timings? I think we all have our threshold of draw or don't. I ve only rather recently started posting my ob drawings on CN. But I've done it a long time. I think my unspoken (bough now typed) cut off is 5/10 seeing. If its 5 or better I will draw if I feel there's something there. For 4/10 or worse,it's gotta be something fantastic, ie; comet shoemaker-levy 9 impacts, invisible rings on Saturn, etc. sometimes though, even with 5/10 or 6/10 if its following a 7/10 ob or better and nothing new us showing in the features I won't bother. It'd be a curious thing to hear others threshold rationales. The bases of the festoons are broad this apparition and you've depicted it well. What a contrast to last apparition. It's fun to make transit timings and it does help me follow the features around the planet. When I first observed the White spot on the SEB it shared the longitude coordinates as Oval BA . Now Oval BA is pulling away. Clear and steady skies. It depends for DSO's--some don't require good seeing to see what can be seen. But on the whole, good seeing is better than poor seeing no matter what object you are looking at. Dean, I expect your timings are more accurate than my informal timings. Some are close, though.
