C8 vs C8A new
      #5669213 - 02/08/13 02:49 PM

Is there a difference in optics and/or build between the C8A and C8 OTAs? And is the C8A worth the price difference?

Thanks,
Don

I couldn't really tell the difference. That's why this post.
I found it at http://www.highpointscientific.com/product/CEL-91020-XLT/Celestron-C8-A-SCT-A... . They are selling a Nexstar C8 SE OTA and the C8A (URL above).

My old 1980 orange tube blew over at Okie- Tex last Sep. it seems OK but I think I might need to replace it. Views of Jupiter at higher power are fuzzy but I'm not really sure that's not collimation. So I'll see on the next clear night if the problem is collimation and if not I'll probably get a new OTA.

Don

I suspect that just means it is an OTA only. There is no difference in the optics.

C8 and C8-A mean the same thing:

This just the old nomenclature where you had C8-A and C8-CF.

A = Aluminum Tube
CF = Carbon Fiber Tube

My C11 was called a C11-CF when I bought it.

The orange tube is the 8 SE style. Dovetail bar on the side (relative to the finder) for use in a Nexstar SE mount.

The black tube has the dovetail bar on the bottom (relative to the finder).

The orange tube (probably)has a black dovetail bar.

The black tube has an orange dovetail bar.

I think relative to the focuser you'll find the dovetail bar is in the same position.

The hazzard of relying upon memory rather than looking at an image of the SE.

The embarassing part is big clue I might have seen if I'd looked at my C5 first.

If it fell and did not break the corrector you should be OK. I did help a guy from Australia with one dented and it skewed the front cell. C8's you gotta love em..
I hadn't heard of a C8A?
