Just got my Polarie, simplicity encarnate
      #5674430 - 02/11/13 04:49 PM

I just got my Vixen Polarie and it is so simply elegant I was immediately in love. I didnt read any instructions, I just slapped on my brand new 100 mm F2 lens, aligned the Polarie using the peep hole and powered it up and had perfectly round stars from my first attempt.

I guess that if I was to buy an Astrophysics mount for my real scope, that's how the experience would go.

Anyway. It's a great little mount and if you where thinking of getting one, you wont regret it.

Enjoy it Hilmi. I love mine.. it was love at first sight.

Before I forget, your success is mainly owed to the pier you were bragging about yesterday I guess

Had you put the Polarie on a shaky tripod your stars would little Cassiopeas each

We need a thread for folks that use trackers. Welcome to the club.

I just wish it didn't get in the way of the camera pointing in some angles. I guess that's easy to fix with a slightly bigger ball head.

Otherwise, it took me less than 5 minutes to take my first picture, although the light pollution made it horrible, but still, I was happy with the speed of set up.

Another option would be to use a gimbal mount (benro gimbal in this case, but it can introduce other problems - the rotation lock knob may bump into your tripod mount plate):

That looks like it adds a lot of weight.

Hilmi,

You'll be surprised at the load capacity of the Polarie (not that you *have* to overload it though ) - scroll down the link that Sedat provided and see what others have put on it, and the results. fwiw the rest of the picture of the mount I posted has a Borg 45ED with reducer attached to the camera .

Would I be surprised enough to attach my TV 60is on it?

I often put my mini Borg Achromatic refractor (50 mm f/5) on my Polarie for casual observation. With a minus violet filter and a 2.5 mm eyepiece, the view is good at up to 100x. The DSLR in this case serves as a balance weight.

The thing is, the TV60is weighs around 2.5 Kg if I remember correctly. Add to that the Canon 7D and you are definitely way beyond the 3 Kg load limit.

By the way, I saw that Japanese website where they make all that gear, but no clear indication how to order.

And one more thing, does anybody offer a cheaper Polar scope? Or an adapter to stick the polar scope from my G11 on the Polarie. I think I saw something like that on that Japanese site, but Google translate is rather bad and makes it hard to fully grasp what is being said on the website.

Herewith is a Japanese website which can provide accessories for various star trackers including the Polarie.
But I do not know how to order parts from them.

OK, first of I would like to apologize for not having any pretty pictures to post, but I did a trial on the tracking accuracy of this mount. I went way beyond the recommended focal length and I attached a 300 mm Tamron lens. The lens is of trash quality, CA by the truck load, but the interesting thing is that even with 30 seconds exposures (I'm limited by light pollution in my trials so far), the stars where very round. I think this is pretty cool considering Vixen promote it as being suitable for up to 110 mm focal length.
