DM6 mount for a Takahashi TOA130
      #5675058 - 02/12/13 12:27 AM

Hey Everyone,

Anyone have any thoughts on mounting my Takahashi TOA130 on a DM6 mount and ash tripod? I bought an iEQ45 for it and it works fine, it just the set up and weight (mount head, tripod +33lbs of counter weights) is kind of a hassle. I had a TV102 on a gibralter mount and loved the simplicity of it. I'm almost entirely a visual observer. With the full set up I want and shipping I'm at around $2800 and I've never seen or used one so I appreciate any feedback.

Check out the Diskmount gallery, lots of pictures of TOA130's on the mounts.
I would recommend using a Losmandy HD tripod with the Losmandy 12" extension for best stability and clearance of the ota.
Also, using widefield eyepieces with a push type mount is a better way to go, I went with all Ethos when I got my DM6 and love the combo.

I have the DM-6 and use it with my SV 115T, C8HD and C9.25HD. I have both the Losmandy tripod with extenion and the tall ash tripod. I would recommend the Losmandy for refractors larger than 115 or SCT larger than the C8.

You might want to consider the T-Rex or the less expensive DSV-3. Maily because they have slow motion controls. I have two other Alt-Az mounts without slow motion and using pushto alone to track at high power can get annoying very fast. The T-Rex isn't much bigger than the DM6 and it can easily handle the 130. It comes with the same 2" tripod used on the CGEM and ATLAS mounts or you can get it without the tripod. The mount and tripod can stay connected and fit into a very nice carrying case supplied with the mount. The sky commander and tripod spreader also fit in that case in separate compartments. So the whole thing is very compact, easy to carry, and easy to setup. You can use the ATLAS pier extension if you need more height for that scope, but I find it works great with my 152mm F/5.9 scope without that extension. The 6" is also very stable on this setup, there is no need to put it on a heavier tripod.

Thanks for the great feedback everyone. I was considering the Losmandy HD tripod instead of the Discmounts Ash tripod but I wanted to save some weight (the Losmandy HD is 35lbs). But I do want to make sure it is stable and the Losmandy is built like a tank. I'll check out the pics posted on the Discmounts website and also the T-rex. Again, thanks for all your feedback, it is much appreciated.

The Berlebach Planet is a fine tripod for the DM6 and at 24 lbs would save you some weight. But you'll definitely need a tripod extension.

Here is a Berlebach Planet with a DM6 mount and an 8" Eagle extension. I had the DM6 ash tripod and it worked fine enough with my FS152, but it took about 3-4 seconds to settle down after a jolt. The Planet is rock solid and settles down immediately and I mean immediately, damping time is less than a second. Being as the TOA130 is quite a bit heavier than the FS152, I think you'd appreciate something a little more stable than that Discmount tripod. The Planet is a lot heavier than the ash tripod but it's also height adjustable, and believe me that is a GREAT feature. There is also a beautiful large wooden tripod tray but it was not installed in this photo.

If you want something you can carry alot easier then check out the lightweight Rob Miller tripod.

Could you give me a link to where you got that extension, Johnny?

I use the TEC-140 on the same DM6, Losmandy pier extension on a Planet. I like that I can fully extend the Planets legs for easy viewing near the zenith. Rock solid setup for visual. Also handles my C11 EdgeHD very well. I use an Argo Navis with 10K encoders for finding the harder stuff.

You can get the Losmandy Pier extension here:

Wow that is an awesome set up! I'll check it and the Rob Miller Tripod as I sometime have to carry my equipment quite a ways before I set it up.

Thanks!

PS your going to love the Binotrons!

May I add I am utterly SHOCKED and GOBSMACKED that the price of the extension has more than DOUBLED since I got mine 6 months ago...??? I mean, $350... REALLY??? That is literally unbelievable.

Thanks for the links, Jeff and Johnny. I think AP have decided they don't want to make many more of these extension tubes. The Losmandy is a lot more reasonably priced.

It does look as if with either of them I'd need an adapter between my Planet's flat top surface and the pier extension, then another adapter between the pier extension and the DM6. That's a bit of a hassle; I think I'd prefer the DM extender even though it doesn't look so cool.

You can get the Planet with an ADATRI AP adapter but yes you also need a DM6 to AP adapter so this setup does get pricey.

I think the Losmandy is 12 inches high, other two options are 8 inches. I need all 12 inches for my TEC-140 to clear the tripod legs when at the zenith. When transporting the mount in my car, I remove the pier extension and DM6 from the Planet and move the load as two pieces.

I bought my Planet with the Losmandy tripod top. I bought my DM6 used with the Losmandy pier extension ($118) and DM6 to G11 adapter ($150) at no extra cost so it was affordable for me.

I also own a Rob Miller Tri36M tripod. I wish I could find an affordable 8" diameter 12" high extension to go between the tripod and my AP900GTO.

If you want/need an extension, the DiscMount one has the huge advantage that you can use it a a handhold. Your setup will be a lot easier to carry.

Great thought Rod, thanks, Im trying to be as portable and "grab and go" (if a TOA 130 is ever grab and go ) as possible.

I really appreciate everyones feedback, lots of great information. Thanks for taking the time to offer ideas and suggestions!
