Jupiter 10 Feb. 2013 new

I was lured out with the promise of clear weather and good conditions by the CSC. Reality turned out to be not quite as good as forecast but good enough for this sketch.

Of interest is the blocky appearance of Oval BA (maybe it will turn into Rectangular BA

) and also the very prominent bright spot in the middle of the South Equatorial Belt (SEB).

I used a 2B and HB pencil on this eyepiece sketch. The temperature was 21°F (-6°C)--not too bad, especially since the wind was calm.

When I went to save the scan I was astonished to discover that I didn't have a folder for 2013 Jupiter observations yet. The weather here has been terrible.

Glad I got this obs done.

Very nice sketch. It's very funny as you have observed Jupiter at the same time as me. Did you see the Io shadow one hour earlier ?

Michael,

Excellent capture. Much detail captured. The bright spot near the CM in the SEB is interesting as is the dark feature touching and preceding the GRS.
Yesterday just after sunset the sky was clear for 20 minutes and I could see Jupiter but by the time I got home clouds closed in. I'm waiting for the weather to improve which will happen some day.
I do get good relief just looking at all the great sketches posted over here.

Thanks everyone--I was very happy to spend some time with Jupiter.

Frank, The bright spot in the SEB was brand new to me--at first I thought I was seeing things. That component of the South Temperate Belt has been very dark and broad for a while now. My previous Jupiter sketch (from December 2nd--yikes!) shows it but only following the GRS. It seems to be traveling towards the preceding limb like Oval BA is. BTW, you know how things merge visually on the limb so the STB may not actually be touching the GRS but just appearing to.

No, that was over by the time I started to observe. My information shows Io's shadow egressing at 0046 UT. Glad you got to see it--I never get tired of watching them.

Beautiful observation. I compared your sketch to Chris' and love the similarities. Without intending to mirror your sentiments in his thread, it really is awesome to have this sketching forum as a resource for observational validation.

Terrible weather is the story as of late, Michael. Have you seen the news? 37" of snow fell from the sky into my backyard in CT with the recent blizzard. Ridiculous! Spitting icy rain right now. I have forgotten what stars look like...

It's been a poor winter for us amateur astronomers. Jason, I've been folowing the news about you poor folks in New England [@ Chris--it's called New England because it's so much better there

] I have an idea what that much snow is like--we got almost that much back in 2009. Your snowfall would have gone off my sheetrock scale.

Very well done, Michael! I love the subtlety with which you've made your drawing; very convincing and realistic!

And don't feel too bad about the snow, we got just as much over here in Italy, be it at an altitude of 770m (+-/2.500ft)
