from the advert - maybe he does know?
Have to agree there about the printed page, though I sure can't pony up for it. Makes the DVD a great option from a cost standpoint.

LOL! It does make sense to me; but the collection is still not for me! And for $10K - someone here (Rod?) just recently put their whole collection out at the curb for pickup.
Well, one man's trash, and all that...

No doubt!
Last year, I put my own collection of Astronomy and S&T (except for the last few years issues) up on Amart as a freebie for local pickup. I was glad to have them taken by someone who could use them.

That would be cool if it was, but it wasn't.
Anyway... I did that very reluctantly, and made every attempt to give all those issues away to somebody/anybody--which were not a complete collection, going back "only" to the 60s--but there were no takers...none. Approaching early retirement and relocation and the fact I was not using the issues due to fact that I have the DVDs, meant they just had to go--well, all the 70s and after, I held onto the 60s.
Is a complete collection worth 10K? I don't know. But I will say that I'd sooner spend the money on that than on a ATV, a Skidoo or two, or a fracking Kia automobile.

bookstores usually sell issues for $1 each, but certainly not an entire collection. there is about 900-1000 issues in his collection.

If he can get $10,000 for his set, more power to him. Me, I'd rather spend $179.99 on the S&T DVD Seven Decade Collection and put the remaining $9820.01 toward a nice big Dob.

I'd rather have the Kia. That's my ride to the dark site. Plenty of space inside, but not too frakin' big on the outside.

I love my Kia Sorento I bought it specifically because of the cargo space in the back. It's perfect for my telescope and gear.

I love my Kia Rondo. Perfect size inside for my small family and plenty of astro gear. Tarps and chairs and such go up in the cargo box.
I could probably fit that entire $10k S&T collection in the Kia with enough room left for my 10" Dob!

A complete collection of Sky and Telescope is like any other piece of used astronomy gear. It is worth EXACTLY what you can convince somebody to pay for it.

Rod's correct, it's worth what someone will pay, not what someone is asking. For example, there are about 8 copies of Planetary Nebulae by Hynes for sale on Amazon, for $250 to over $1000. They have all been there for sale for years. I would buy one in a heartbeat for $100, and I bet they all would sell very fast at that price, but yet they sit on the shelf with no buyer at $250 and up.
I would say his collections is worth $2000, especially since you would need to go there and pick it up. There would most likely be damage with shipping them.
Anyone else's estimate?

I'd love to see this scene on Pawn Stars.
Rick: So, whaddya wanna do with this? Pawn it? Sell it? S&T Owner: Sell it. Rick: How much do you want? S&T Owner: $10,000 Rick: Ah, that's not gonna happen. Look, I know this stuff means a lot to you and it's cool that you've got every issue going back to when Pop's hair was still black... Pop: At least I have hair. Rick: ...this magazine has no collectible value. I've never had a customer come in asking for a specific issue. And until somebody comes up with proof that one of these issues was published by Martians, it won't have collectible value. Pop: Even if these were collectible, they're in pretty rough condition. Looks like this page with the blonde standing next to the telescope gets regular attention. S&T Owner: So, how much are you willing to offer? Rick: I'm not. Even if I paid you a hundred bucks for the whole collection, it would just take up space in my back room. My recommendation is that you take the collection home and continue to get enjoyment from reading the back issues. That, or donate it to a local school. You'll get more satisfaction doing that than I can offer.
Later... S&T Owner: He doesn't know what he's just turned down. This set has value and one day he'll regret not paying me the $10,0000. Rick: If I had a nickel for every time a customer walked in asking for an issue of Sky & Telescope, I'd have a nickel.
