Hi All, Here's my first dso capture! Orion's Nebula...I guess its the "hello World" of dso imaging. I finally got to put my Ts65edq and Atik 16 to work. The image consists of 10-135s unguided sub-frames registered and stacked in DSS with final processing done in PS 7.0.

Congratulations! If you would like to be able to compare this to other pictures by other people you might want to flip it, this is a mirror image. You get a mirror image when you use a diagonal which is generally not advisable for astrophotography. It is one more place for photons to get absorbed or otherwise messed up. It is also one more item that has to be held steady during the exposure so you won't get star streaks.
It looks like you have a fairly nice mount. 135 seconds unguided and your stars are round. I would have to throw out half my images if I did that.

Thanks all! @Steve...I didn't use a diagonal, the atik 16 went straight into the scope's focuser.

Steve, Its funny you mentioned the mirrored image...when I was imaging m42 definitely wasn't oriented as is shown here. I didn't change the orientation in PS 7 so I'm wondering if DSS might be the culprit. I'll check it out...

I have twice before commented on other people's image being reversed and both times they told me they did NOT use a diagonal. One person said they only used CCDsoft and Pixinsight. The other person said they used MaximDL and PixInsight. Another commenter claimed to have the problem with MaximDL. Did you use PixInsight?

Welcome to the debilitating obsession......errr.....fun filled and rewarding hobby known as deep sky astrophotography. It only gets worse from here. :-). Excellent image. I like the idea of M42 as the "Hello World" of imaging. Very appropriate.

That's a fantastic first DSO image.
My first DSO was also M42 and I didn't get half that much detail with my CPC1100 and a 5 minute exposure.
Well done!

Here's a reprocess. I had also taken a set of shorter subs to blend the softer core into my main capture. So, again a first for me, I did a layer mask treatment in PS7 to generate this image of M42. Still a lot to learn and re-learn! Thanks for looking.

That's a nice improvement.
Based upon this being your first DSO, I suspect we'll be seeing some amazing images coming from you in the future.

Excellent first image. I dont know whether to congratulate you or offer sympathies now that you are probably hooked and will see all you hard earned cash quickly be distributed to all the vendors that sell the thousands of pieces of equipment to make your images even better. Time to start working on the excuses you can use when the wifey sees yet another box arrive on your doorstep.
